Prepare for Winter: Part Two

When the weather gets cold the last thing you want to do is run around in a towel post-shower finding something to wear...

MIA reports in my household are often bellowed from my room when clothes mysteriously go missing in my wardrobe – often they are just swallowed up with the millions of other items that haven’t been worn since 1993, but the irritation is high, especially for those who have to listen to my continuous rants.

In winter, it’s always worse. These items that are “lost” are in fact not lost, but just hidden amongst a myriad of tops, jackets, skirts, MC Hammer pants and much more that certainly does not deserve any wardrobe space.

And it’s cold! Man alive is it cold when you are running from wardrobe to drawers to laundry (just in case) wearing very little in search of that perfect little cashmere jumper that is oh so warm and will look delightful with your Veronika Maine skirt.

So ease the hassle and tame your wardrobe to a workable piece of art that becomes your friend rather than foe.

Clothing Cleanse
The classic pieces in your wardrobe are always worth keeping. Everything else has to go. Grab a big black rubbish sack and get ruthless! Is it pilled? Chuck it out. Does it have shoulder pads? Out it goes. Can you remember the last time your wore it? No? Well you know what to do.

The great divide
After the funeral of your unwanted stuff your clothing can now breathe in the new relaxed space, so it is time for the great divide. Separation here is key as you now need to separate your winter clothes and find a new home for those summer ones. Layering will always be hot, so keep summer items you know you can layer up. Everything else can be removed and carefully packed away. A large suitcase under the bed is an excellent resource for this. If the idea of shunning your summer clothes for the winter seems inhumane and unkind to these beautiful little pieces try grouping your items together, jackets, skirts, shirts, jeans etc. Finding that cashmere jumper will be far easier when it's hanging nicely with its buddies in the jumper section.

Winter Audit, 2005
By now, you're probably looking at your half empty wardrobe, cursing me for suggesting you throw out all that made you secure in your fashion collection. Don’t start frantically rummaging through the rubbish bins for your old bits and pieces , now is the time to do a full audit of all the things you have, all the things you need and all the things you wished you needed and therefore have made it to the wish list. Next step – go shopping! Grab a friend and your list and have some fun with the winter trends!

Next week… Mind body and soul – the winter way
