Take a walk off the beaten path of your usual aural pleasures and experience the fantastic new OC compilation - Music from the OC: Mix 4.
With two previous mixes and a memorable Chrismukkah edition, the OC is a hot house for all the undiscovered indie talent that flies low under the mainstream musical radar.
Compilations, especially ones from a TV program and especially from angsty teen shows, have the potential to be mediocre and more often than not don’t live up to expectation.
But then The OC is slightly different from your average angsty teen show. Its tongue-in-cheek piss take of all things Orange County has become a global phenomenon - like Dawson’s Creek in it’s day, but oh so much cooler.
The OC has won over the ardent approval of many I know, who at first refused to even watch the show, based on their so called “standards” of what good television is. Let’s face it - who isn’t a big fan of the OC - closet or open?
As a result, the slick product that is The OC has churned out a great compilation CD - possibly the best so far in the series. It brings back memories (such as “Champagne Supernova” by Matt Pond PA which featured during the Spiderman kiss between Seth and Summer), it flows well with a great vibe from varying degrees of indie rock to more mellow offerings, and best of all, it provides a chance to learn about some great new bands.
There are some really good tracks which include “Eve, The Apple Of My Eye” by Bell X1, local lads Evermore and their song “For One Day”, the sweet “View” by Modest Mouse, the girlie “Goodnight and Go” by Imogen Heap and the melancholic “To Be Alone With You” by Surfjan Stevens. Also look out for new Beck track, “Scarecrow”.
Definitely worth a listen if you are a fan or you like discovering the latest offering in indie coolness - Music from the OC: Mix Four is, as one fan put it; “as sharp as Marissa and as cool as Seth”.
