It’s great that summer is still sticking around, but the effect it can have on your skin is less than desirable.
Hot sun, salty water and chlorinated swimming pools have left my skin looking dry and tired - and no matter how good your tan, if your skin’s not looking soft and supple you just don’t glow.
But I’ve recently found some new products that have come to my rescue. Ok, that probably sounds a bit drama-queen-like, but my old moisturiser just wasn’t going the distance and I think my shower products were making things worse.
See it turns out that washing your skin actually removes its moisture – so all that sloughing away with my loofah and shower gel was hindering, not helping the situation.
Since leaving the house without having a shower was not an option, I figured I needed to clean myself with something a bit creamier. So now I’m starting off my mornings with Johnson’s Baby Simply Soft Body Wash, which moisturises while you wash.
Even though this body wash is leaving my skin feeling soft and moisturised, I still love the feeling of lotion on my skin after a shower.
So I decided to switch my body lotion as well and try the Simply Soft 24 Hour Moisture which is also part of the Johnson’s baby range.
Luckily this product is fast absorbing, cause I really don’t have time to stand in the bathroom waiting for my skin to feel non-greasy enough to put my clothes on.
It’s filled with natural oils and waxes which help lock in the moisture (and it’s the oil that makes it fast absorbing) and it has a light, fresh fragrance which my boyfriend has become rather partial to (on me, not him luckily!).
I’ve also discovered a little trick – if you apply the moisturiser within three minutes of showering you get a great result as this stops the skin from dehydrating, and locks in the moisture so your skin feels silky smooth all day.
Actually make that more than a day – this stuff lasts 24 hours so I know it’s doing its thing while I worry about doing mine.
The only problem is when I go for post-work swims, which has been happening frequently (for Auckland girls I highly recommend Mission Bay for an evening dip!), I lose my moisturised glow.
Luckily there’s one more product in this range – the Simply Soft Calming lotion, which contains lavender. I tend to slather this on my skin after I’ve been in the salty water as I find it very soothing – especially if I get that unexplained itchy feeling I seem to be prone to post-swim.
I also like to massage a bit of this moisturiser onto my feet to relax them after a day shopping – nothing makes your feet hurt more than traipsing around a mall all day!
It really is amazing what a few tricks and a good product can do – bring on the rest of the golden weather I say, because I want to get as much use as possible out of my flesh-bearing clothes while my skin’s looking so hot!
