We Love: Standing Out

Your mission; if you choose to accept (no this isn't an army recruitment ad) is to be that tulip in a sea of daisies; to be that white dove amongst a pack of pigeons; to wear that retro headscarf when everyone else at the beach still has their head buried firmly in the sand with last seasons trucker hat!

Kiwis have long been renowned for a little ingenuity and DIY attitude. Fly the nzgirl flag and accessorize with a little off-beat bling this summer.

So you've picked up that sultry halter neck or shoestring slip dress but are a little hesitant to wear it as the evil that is Christmas food is still rearing its ugly head? Why not break it up with a thick belt. Weaved numbers can be bought at chain establishments for minimal cost. Or how about visiting your local second hand store for a beautiful belt of yesteryear.

With summer in parts of the country failing to present itself and the prospect on a mini a little too scary, why not invest in some 80's 3/4 leggings to shake things up a little.

Or you could transform your winter nylons by attacking them with scissors around the ankle line. Just bear in mind that they will end up shorter than what you anticipate, so start off quite close to the foot. Department stores usually stock a range of nylons in all the colours of the rainbow. Our pick this season is mint green.

You can never go wrong with bohemian beads. Long beads in all their 80's splendor are stocked in ready supply at second hand or even some antique shops. Thicker, shorter beads, resembling lollies (no, sadly not edible) can be located at surf shops.

The head-scarf is a guaranteed head turner. Salvation Army stores often have them cheap as chips for no more that $3.00!

Fold it to form a triangle. Start from the tip and roll to resemble a line. Place over head and tie at the base of the neck. The scarf is a tried and true method on obscuring humidity wrecked hair, that's right the dreaded, but inevitable frizz.

Also, if your beach bag is looking a tad tired, tie a scarf onto the handle. This is the ultimate in retro chic. Oh Audrey Hepburn would be proud.

Be the envy of all your friends and let emerge the sultry summer siren you always knew you were!!
