If you need something to keep the sun off your skin, protect you shoulders from a brisk breeze or to warm you up after a swim at the beach there is one amazing fashion item that can do it all for you.
It’s easy to see why the versatile yet stylish poncho is one of the summer’s must have items.
Ponchos, first made popular in the swinging sixties, have reached fashion status again, replacing pashminas and ‘shrunken jackets’ as the new summer cover-up. This is inspired in part by celebrities like Jessica Simpson and Jennifer Aniston.
Prized for their versatility, a poncho can be worn in a variety of ways. Belted like a 1950s style cardigan, open over a bikini at the beach, or paired back with your favourite denim items.
Try teaming staple outfits like cropped pants and singlet tops with a longer length poncho (pictured is from EziBuy) for a casual yet glamorous look.
A lacey delicate style is great for this, and you can find them in a variety of colours from hot orchid to green. The look is simple, but the lace detailing gives the outfit a classic edge. The same poncho can be paired with black pants and a tube top for evening wear, or be worn over a classic black dress.
Wearing a poncho over your bikini is a great idea, as it keeps the sun and wind off you whilst you’re out of the water. You can opt for the woollen or cotton mix crochet styles from places like Supre, The Valley Beyond or team your bikini with a colourful lace poncho for a funkier feel, dressy enough to wear to lunch or shopping.
Ponchos are also great for office wear. Instead of a blazer or belted cardigan why not wear your suit basics with a flowing wrap style poncho.
Or find a pretty lacey one (pictured from Just Jeans), which would be perfect for wearing with tailored charcoal grey pants and a fitted white shirt.
The best thing about ponchos is that they are so easy to wear and one poncho can be worn in a variety of ways to convey different looks. Many of the stretch lace versions can be worn as skirts when pinned at the sides.
Unlike jackets they can easily be folded up in your bag when you’re not wearing them and I’ve even used mine as an emergency picnic blanket.
So do yourself and your wardrobe a favour and buy the fix-all-favourite - the poncho.
