Post-Christmas and New Years most of us are dead tired, flat broke and longing for some pampering.
The joy is that you needn't spend $150 on a salon treatment when everything you need to give yourself a pamper session is probably already in your house. Raid your pantry and your fridge for an all out party girl pamper session.
Face fantastic
Your first step will be to cleanse your face - after the summer sun, cocktails and late nights your skin will love you for it.
Start by first removing all your makeup, and depending on how sorry your skin is looking you can opt for a mask or a steam followed by an exfoliating cleanse.
If your skin is looking dull or dry a mask made of fresh fruit may help, fruit contains alpha-hydroxy acids which work to remove the surface layer of dead skin revealing fresher skin beneath.
A good one to try is the peach mask. Cook a peach till it’s soft, mash it up with a fork add a tablespoon of honey and oatmeal until it is thick. Apply to clean skin and let sit for ten minutes before rinsing off with warm water.
To steam fill your basin or a large bowl with hot water and add to this a few drops of essential oil or lemon juice, drape a towel over your head and steam your face for up to five minutes. This will open the pores and help detoxify the skin.
A simple cleanser can be made from 1/2 a cup of oatmeal or Cornmeal and yoghurt, mix together until you form a paste, smooth over the entire face avoiding the eye area and wash off with warm water.
Manageable mane
Salt water and sun combine to make frizzy unmanageable hair. To combat this, comb through your hair a couple of tablespoons of good olive oil and then cover with glad wrap or a shower cap. Leave for fifteen minutes then wash clean.
Smooth skin
Smooth skin is easy to achieve, use an exfoliant such as a body brush or loofah sponge. Work from the feet upwards in circular motions to improve your circulation whilst revealing supple skin.
Alternatively you can use a sugar scrub which is easily made at home. Combine brown sugar, aloe vera and jojoba oil (if available) in a bowl. Mix until you form a smooth paste, rub this into the skin in circular motion. The sugar crystals will scrub away dead skin cells and the jojoba oil and aloe will moisturise your skin. Rinse clean.
Sleepy soak
If you need extra pampering a soak in the tub will release the tension from aching muscles after endless nights partying. Fill a bath full of warm water and add bath salts or essential oils - alternatively you can make your own milk bath. Add two tablespoons of milk powder and a drop of lavender oil (if available) to a warm bath. The enzymes in the milk will leave your skin fantastically soft and the scent of lavender is known for its relaxing properties. Shower when finished.
Super soft
Finish your at home spa with your favourite moisturising cream, the richer the better as the whole day should be about luxury. And remember your hair; there are moisturising balms on the market for silken tresses so take advantage of them.
Forgotten feet
Don't forget your feet, they are the things holding you up in those stilettos during New Year’s night. If you don't have a soak in the tub at least give your feet one, massage them with a moisture rich cream and then put them into baby powdered fresh socks. mmmm dreamy.
