There are a couple of scary things about this new smoking ban.
The first one is facing what will be my final attempt at quitting smoking. I’m determined this time, to do it. After smoking on and off (I consider myself a social smoker. I only smoke when I drink - but I drink too much) for about ten years, I have made the decision that this time I really am gonna kick the habit for good.
It is scary yes, but not as scary as the other thing this ban may cause. You’ve heard it reported in the media already, the warnings are out there but we thought that we’d give you the downside to banning smoking in bars.
Imagine this scenario. You and your girls are having after work drinks at the bar, the beginning of a big night out. As a group of four attractive young ladies, you’re attracting the attention of a couple of men who have been buying your drinks for most of the evening. They’re nice guys, and a couple of them are pretty cute, so you four girls decide to have a ‘meeting’ outside and decide where the rest of the evening will take you.
As you leave your drinks at the bar with the boys, you spark up outside and gossip away. You come back and continue with the guys and start to feel more and more drunk. The last thing you remember when you wake up next to one of the guys, is taking a sip on your cocktail.
The instances of drink spiking are becoming more and more common and with the new smoking ban in place, it seems that the cases just keep increasing.
The drug used is normally GBL or ‘G’ which is an odourless and colourless drug that has a slightly salty taste and the effect is similar to being completely intoxicated. It’s certainly not the behaviour of a lady. Swaying and stumbling, all make for easy targets when you’re out on the town. And asshole guys just seem so much nicer when you’ve had a few.
The easiest ways to avoid your drink being spiked are:
Avoid accepting unopened drinks if they are in bottles or cans
If you are buying drinks or having them bought for you, make sure you watch them being poured
If you think your drink tastes unusual, stop drinking it
Make sure you and your friends are always with each other though out the evening – just like any big night out really
If something does happen, there are places you can turn for help. Remember that the situation you’re in is not your fault, is a crime and needs to be reported. Go straight to the police, explain what happened and the bastard will be prosecuted.
But there are a few guidelines to remember in a worst case scenario:
Don’t shower in case you wash away any evidence
Go to the doctor or the emergency department at the hospital and get a urine test. This will prove you were drugged
And if you need help go to:
Drug Rape Trust NZ
Rape Crisis
Local Hospital Emergency Centre
Alcohol Drug Helpline
Sexual Abuse HELP Foundation 24 hour Supportline
