Spa Treatment: Salt Scrub

How crap is my job? (Insert sarcasm here).

I called Equipoise Beauty Spa to organise some prizes for you guys and guess what they did?

Offered me a treatment for myself! Either a facial or a salt scrub. My, how to decide! Well, I’d had a facial before (although not at Equipoise) and it was fun, but the salt scrub sounded intriguing.

Described as being scrubbed down with salts imported from Israel which have been warmed in olive oil, I began to envisage historic tales of when Odysseus (from the Greek epic The Odyssey) was washed ashore after a storm tore his ship to shreds, then bathed in olive oil and salts by Greek maidens to remove the scum left on his skin.

Of course, I was not Odysseus (the lack of male organs and heroic characteristics made this fairly obvious) but the idea of getting washed down with salts and olive oil seemed rather romantic (although being scrubbed by a Greek hero would have been far more so).

So after a lazy Saturday morning of yoga and coffee I headed off to Equipoise Spa at 100 Jervois Road, Ponsonby, Auckland for my much anticipated treatment.

As I walked through the doors I immediately became completely relaxed. Soft music playing sounds of waves crashing on the beach, overtoned with windpipes serenaded me as I met with Liz, my beautician.

She guided me through the frosted glass doors, straight into the room where she instructed me to strip off and lay face down on the towel. Her soothing voice almost put me to sleep then and there, until she started rubbing the salts across my skin.

They felt warm, a little gooey and slightly rough (that would have been the salt crystals) but I imagined my dead skin cells being rubbed off and how wonderful my skin would feel. After about 30 minutes of Liz massaging me from top to toe she then instructed me, in her lucid voice, to jump in the shower and wash the salt and oil off.

As the warm water rinsed over me I smelled my skin and noticed it had the subtle scent of the soothing aromatherapy blend I used at home. And as I washed, the water beaded (must have been the excess oil) and my skin was velvety soft.

Then I got back up on the bed and Liz worked a lovely moisturiser across my newly buffed surface. After another 15 minutes of pampering I was all done! I smelt divine, my skin was as smooth as a baby's and all the stresses of the week had been completely rubbed away.

I must do this more often.

B*
