As you pick it up, flip it over and read the track listings, you start to scratch yourself and think “Hmm I know this one, oh, and that one was released last year, nice”.
Cautiously you open the CD cover and place it into your stereo. Kazaam! Steriogram has zapped you with an uncontrollable urge to twist and jump, scream and tap. Congratulations, you have now joined Steriogram’s legions of devoted fans, and ready to persuade your mates to listen to the coolest band on the planet.
With greater energy than Russia’s Kalinin Nuclear Power Station, faster than a 3.8 - 1996 Lamborghini Diablo SV and a tad more addictive than your mamma’s home-made-secret-recipe chocolate mud cake, 'Schmack' is simply a must own album bursting full of innovative tunes, carefree and comical plots, and a pioneering ability to combine rock, rap and punk-metal into a bouncingly good time.
The ‘Walkie Talkie Man’ video is becoming one of the most requested music video’s of the year, not only is it an original masterpiece, courtesy of Frenchman Michael Gondry who made The White Stripes lego video, but its also a tremendously captivating song with dirty distortion, furiously fast vocals, and a hilarious theme.
The band has an uncanny ability to mix youthful dynamics, solid rock guitars, feel-good rhythms and freakishly fast rap into a polished bold product with a statement that resembles a band that can’t give a rats pubic hair about categorising their music, thus encouraging listeners to do the same and follow their own ideas rather than society’s norms.
Like Frank Sinatra, these North Islanders changed the rules and said, “we’ll do it our way”. Forming in 1999, the band toured New Zealand gaining support, scored the theme song for the Vodafone Football Kingz TV Campaign, entered and won the Channel Z’s ‘Little Day In’.
Steriogram then decided to do what it took to hit the big league. Believing in themselves, the band spent less time at their day jobs, and more time producing and practicing. By thinking outside the square, Steriogram filmed a budgeted music video for the internet, which eventually was seen by a U.S talent scout. A short time later the band was snapped up by Capitol Records and touring America.
I can’t push this CD enough, really stoked these kiwi lads are flying the flag with an awesome sound. Every track is pure gold and having a favourite is more difficult than driving up Queen Street on a Saturday night. You need this album!!
