Pretty in Pink

Nothing celebrates pure femininity and that unique girlishness inside each of us quite like the colour pink. Pink was a guaranteed favourite when we were little girls, and many of us are still huge fans - and why not? Pink perfectly represents the typical nzgirl – it’s sexy, cute, romantic, flirty, fun…and doesn’t take itself too seriously!

Pink has been a solid favourite for designers over the last few years, and continues to be popular this season.

Many designers have included a few carefully selected pink pieces in their latest ranges. One of the most coveted items this winter is the pink coat. Portmans, Max and Ricochet all have a pink coat in their winter collections this year, and they are definitely must-have pieces for your wardrobe.

Other hot pink items this season include pink knitted jumpers, chunky-knit pink scarves with matching hats and gloves, pink Ugg boots, and the undeniably gorgeous Chanel-inspired pink tweed jacket with matching skirt.

Pink comes in a zillion different shades – hot pink, fuchsia, baby pink, dusty pink, mauve pink – so trying to match pinks can prove to be a very difficult task at times! When you are wearing pink it’s best to keep it simple. The tip is to either wear all one shade of pink or mix with basic colours. Black, white or purple all look stunning with pink.

Pink has had some great publicity in recent times, and there really is no use debating it – Pink is in and it is here to stay.

- Elle Woods of Legally Blonde fame is probably the most infamous pink enthusiast. Both the original and the sequel openly declared it was OK for big girls to relive their childhood and celebrate their passion for pink.

- You don’t have to look much further than the red carpet to know pink is the hot colour this season, with celebrities celebrating the pink craze at all the hottest parties and award ceremonies. Just last month Keisha Castle-Hughes looked sweet and sophisticated dressed in a baby pink Liz Mitchell number. At the Emmy Awards last year, Sarah Jessica Parker looked super-sexy when she wore her much-admired (and talked about) pink ‘candy floss’ dress.

Of course, there can be shocking pink moments too. Who could forget Lara Flynn Boyle’s shameful display of pink when she dressed herself as a ballerina at the 2003 Golden Globe Awards ceremony a few years back? Or Gwyneth at the 1999 Oscars?

Fashion faux pas aside, at the end of the day pink cannot be categorised or judged because pink is everything! Pink can be whatever you want it to be. Sophisticated, subtle, strong or sexy – just listen to what your mood dictates. And remember, if you wear pink to celebrate your individuality then you will always wear it well!
