“Thank You” is an essential greatest hits album for all rock fans.
The collection comprises the best songs from the Stone Temple Pilots’ five previous studio albums, and also includes a brand new single, “All In The Suit That You Wear”. Ever since the 1992 release of the debut album “Core”, Stone Temple Pilots have been a headlining rock act.
They are also regarded by some as one of the top three bands to emerge in the 1990s, alongside Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Not bad.
The album opens with “Vasoline”, an excellent, grunty, riff-filled explosion of a song. The second track, “Down”, is one of the best songs on the album; but then, they’re all good songs, as is the nature of a greatest hits album. “Down” opens with nasty guitars, overlaid with the evil whisper of Scott Weiland as he snarls, “pleased to meet you”. “Down” tests Weiland’s vocal range as he screams, whispers and generally rocks his arse off. You can practically feel the testosterone oozing out of this song.
“Plush”, will be familiar to all Rock listeners. An oldie but a goody, “Plush” is a catchy, sing along song. The acoustic version later on in the album loses some of its intensity without the heavy guitars, but still sounds good.
“Creep” is a slow moving, heartfelt song, with an uncharacteristic sweet message, as Weiland sings, “take time with the one at hand”, sounding quite a lot like Kurt Cobain crossed with the Staind singer. The rockier chorus balances nicely with the quiet patches.
“Interstate Love Song” is my all time favourite song by these guys. The thoughtful, melancholic opening chords launch into a grunty riff, followed by the distinctive chorus. Many of us will have sung along to “leaving on a Southern train, only yesterday you lied”. The song is a reminiscent one, distinctive in its early 90’s style.
“Sex Type Thing”, from the band’s debut album “Core”, is a grunty, macho track, and is one of the heaviest (and best) tracks.
Absolute best tracks: Interstate Love Song, Down, Plush, Sex Type Thing
Overall: A must-have CD, showcasing 16 great rock tracks. Some of the songs I had always loved, but never knew who sang them. A couple of the tracks are not so brilliant, such as “Lady Picture Show”, and “Sour Girl” but the new track “All In The Suit That You Wear” shows these guys still have talent.
