After the phenomenal success of last year’s campaign, the Glassons Breast Cancer Research Trust t-shirts are back! This year you can grab yourself a tee designed by one of 5 celebrity designers including Kelly Osbourne (yes, really)…
Kelly is one of 5 celebrities who have lent their artistic talents to the annual Glassons Breast Cancer Research Trust T-shirt campaign. The fundraising campaign, now in its second year, is aiming to raise $500,000 for breast cancer research in New Zealand.
The 2004 lineup of celebrity designs and designers includes:
Kelly Osbourne - 'Love Yourself'
P Money - 'Hands on Turntables'
Kate Sylvester - 'Orchid Lei'
Petra Bagust - 'Milk Jugs'
Stacey Daniels - 'Lyrical Love'
This year’s celebrity designs are IN STORES NOW for $29.95, with $10 from every T-shirt sold being donated to the Breast Cancer Research Trust. They are available only from Glassons stores nationwide.
This year's fundraising follows the hugely successful 2003 inaugural campaign, which raised $310,000 for breast cancer research.
New Zealand has one of the world’s highest rates of breast cancer. The disease affects one in every twelve women and claims more than 700 lives every year.
The Designers, and the Designs…
KATE SYLVESTER - "ORCHID LEI"
What influenced your T-shirt design? “We wanted a really positive feminine image that all women could respond to, and the lei was perfect - wearing the T-shirt makes you feel happy.”
Why is this campaign important to you? “The project is especially pertinent to us as Rebecca Wadey (26), our publicity and sales manager, has fought breast cancer this year. She has been very inspirational, and we feel the lei T-shirt reflects her beautiful courageous spirit.”
P-MONEY - "HANDS ON TURNTABLES"What influenced your T-shirt design? “Seeing as I'm a Producer and DJ I wanted to incorporate something musical so I went for the obvious - a picture of my hands on the decks. But it's also kind of cheeky too if you read between the lines.”
Why is this campaign important to you? “It's a health issue and everyone should be encouraged to look after themselves. Plus, anything I can do to help keep the women of our country happy and healthy is fine by me!”
STACEY DANIELS - "LYRICAL LOVE"
What influenced your T-shirt design? “I wanted to offer something simple, summery and fresh. I think the lyrics to love songs create some of the sweetest poetry, so I combined a few of the nicest, with the word "love" or "aroha" removed - that way all the love goes into the T-shirt. It encompasses the feeling that I got from last year's campaign, women love wearing them, and they love celebrating and supporting the sisters. The Maori love song "E I po" by Prince Tui Teka is one of my favourites, and that's where the Maori lyric comes from.“
Why is this campaign important to you? “I'm ecstatic to be part of the campaign because it is an example of New Zealand women at their most powerful - strong, proactive... and of course, shopping! I'm one of thousands of us that have lost an amazing woman to breast cancer, so I relish the opportunity to raise money for the Breast Cancer Research Trust, and ultimately, to protect ourselves better.“
PETRA BAGUST - "MILK JUGS"
What influenced your T-Shirt design? “Being a new mum influenced me a lot because my boobs are more useful than they have ever been in my life. I still marvel at the miracle of making milk and feeding a growing human being. I got thinking about some of the things that breasts get called, like jugs… I also collect china jugs, which I love – they are so beautiful and fragile. So putting it all together made sense, 'Milk Jugs' just seemed humorously relevant…
“I wanted the picture to be simple and a bit raw so I got a twig out of the garden and used it with Indian ink to draw my jugs, they got simpler and simpler, until they were just the essence of jugs. The words are meant to be a celebration and warning of something which is precious and worth looking after – our breasts.”
Why is this campaign important to you? “Because I'm a chick and I know that nobody wants to suspect or think they have breast cancer let alone get it. Anything that helps women (and the odd man) find out what's going on sooner rather than later is worth supporting. If women will get checked and follow up on their own instincts, it will save lives, which is completely brilliant.”
KELLY OSBOURNE - "LOVE YOURSELF"
Why is this campaign important to you? “I wanted to be part of this campaign because I thought it was a great way to bring awareness to breast cancer. If I can help even one person through this, it would make all the difference to me.”
