When she wrote her hit single “Dumb Girls”, 26 year-old New Yorker Lucy Woodward had no idea that she would end up performing in New Zealand just a few months later.
Born in England and raised in Amsterdam, Lucy grew up surrounded by music. Both her parents are “musicologists” - her father is a composer and conductor for the BBC, while her mother is an opera singer and teacher – which explains why she’s got her own musical thing going on!
Here are 5 reasons why nzgirl counts Lucy Woodward as one of the women we love…
1. She’s been a “dumb girl” too…
“I think when you fall in love you get a little bit in a bubble and then you’re really not aware of what’s going on. You are on this other planet. My message is to be very aware of what’s going on. If you hear late night whisperings on a phone call and it’s him talking to somebody else, don’t think he’s talking to his mother. That didn’t happen to me but it’s a matter of being smart, being aware and always having your own life and being as independent as you can be. Don’t wait for him. Have your own world and life and then have your life with him too. I’m pretty independent. That’s how my mom raised me and I’ve always felt pretty balanced in my relationships.”
2. She’s sick of cheesy pop tarts…
“I went into this project with the feeling that it’s time for something different in pop music. “I think that people are really ready for some original sounds. You can hear my roots in this music, but I hope that I’ve made something that’s fresh, something that will satisfy people’s craving for music that’s honest and soulful.”
3. Been there, done that…
“I Want Your Sex” George Michael, on the “faith” record. It was one of those things like turn it up, shut the blinds, and think ‘I hope mom isn’t home, because she is going to kill me that I’m listening to this stuff right now’. My mom was an opera singer, she studied opera, and she wouldn’t really let me listen to a lot of those kinds of records. Anything with a thump… It was too… It was Rock and Roll, it was drugs, it was sex…”
4. She admits to having bad days…and enjoying them!
“I've always liked putting on lipstick and getting dressed up, but when it comes down to doing a record in the studio I'm like the sweatiest, greasiest, baseball-cap-wearing singer. When I work, I get gritty. I love dressing up and I love fashion but I was always just like let's make some music. Now, when you get a record deal, yeah, it does help.”
5. She looks on the bright side of life:
We all have tense moments of ‘what am I doing on this planet’. Anybody - girl or guy. I always come around. You fall down and pick yourself up again. I think that’s my motto for living. Be adventurous and seize the day. That kind of where I got my album title, “While You Can”. Do it now while you can. We don’t know how long we’re here for. Go for it every day. Be as positive as you can be.”
Last words…
“Just find your sound. Don’t sell out, and just do what you do, love it, breathe it, and if you don’t love it than don’t do it. You have to love what you do, and put your heart into it.”
"You live and learn by just going for it. Make a fool of yourself! I did it all the time. You will learn from every experience and when you know that, there is a lot to look forward to. When you believe in what you do, people see and believe it and you WILL BE HEARD. You can't fake that."
