I think Spike Lee is one of Hollywood’s most insightful directors, and 25th Hour has confirmed that belief. 25th Hour is going to be one of those movies that people say, “Have you seen 25th Hour yet? You’ve got to see it, it’s brilliant”…and it is. The story is simple, the script is great and the characters are realistic.

Monty Brogan (Edward Norton) has been dealing drugs since high school, but now his past crimes have caught up with him. He’s been busted by the DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) and is 24 hours away from starting a seven-year jail term. The film follows Monty’s last night of freedom, starting with dinner at his father’s bar, then a final catch up with his two best friends (Jakob and Francis) and his girlfriend at a nightclub.

Kiwi actress Anna Paquin also turns up playing a sexy student from Francis’ writing class. She crashes Monty’s last night our and ends up having quite a night out.

Spike Lee is known for being quite political – and this film is no exception. 25th Hour is as much a film about friendship and honesty as it is a tribute to post-911 New York. Set in and around the World Trade Center, the film is full of American flags, fireman memorials and 911 references. There is even a shot from Jakob’s apartment with the WTC hole being excavated in the background.

The only thing that annoyed me about this film is the double takes – you see a punch from one angle, then the next shot shows it from another – resulting in two punches for the price of one. Again, it’s a Spike Lee thing.

This is one movie you don’t want to miss on the big screen.

25th Hour is in cinemas now.
