Wow…heavy….

Did you know that some parts of the world have technically heavier in gravity than others – and one of these areas in right in NZ?

That’s right, if you happen to be standing in the Fiordlands (Doubtful Sound and Dusky Sound) then you’ll always weigh more than if you were in some place like Auckland! Okay, okay, so its not actually able to be detected on the bathroom scales – but it is a sign that that area is in for some big geological activity in the next few million years.

A study done by an American science journal says that Fiordlands is one of the newest places in the world where the Earth’s plates are grinding together – that’s the kind of activity that causes earthquakes, etc Taupo is considered very active – and this is what is going to happen to the Fiordlands eventually.

The grinding of the Earth’s plates also causes heavy rocks from the planet’s core to move closer to the earth’s surface – and this is what causes the gravity levels to rise! The American study showed that gravity in the area was up 150 units above the average. Now that’s heavy…
