New Zealand’s Hottest Home Baker whipped itself into a frenzy last night for its first episode on TV3. Eight of New Zealand’s top amateur bakers began battling it out to win $20,000 and the title of New Zealand’s Hottest Home Baker!
Each week the contestants’ baking skills are tested as they race against the clock to bake up a storm and escape elimination. And here at nzgirl we’ll be bringing you weekly action from the show as well as sharing a recipe from the departing baker! Sad for them, yum for us!
This week the Kiwi bakers whipped up something special as they brought their signature dishes to the judging table. Unfortunately Amy was the first to be eliminated, but she was good enough to share her secret recipe all the same...

Amy was inspired to bake from watching her Nana in the kitchen when she was just a youngster. Her cup cakes are famous in her group of friends and she enjoys baking for the joy it brings! Not only that, she has her horse’s name tattooed on her back and is a self acclaimed neat freak in the kitchen! We love her full arm sleeves!
AMY’S SPINACH AND FETA PIE
Ingredients:
Bunch of spinach
250g tub lite cottage cheese
200g traditional feta – crumbled
2 egg whites
1 whole egg
2 TBSP wholegrain mustard
Pepper
100g pine nuts
2 sheets lite flaky puff pastry
Method:
Mix egg whites, egg, feta, cottage cheese, mustard and pepper
Wilt and dry spinach
Roast pine nuts
Combine all
Line greased tin with pastry
Pour in mixture
Bake at 200 degrees for 40 mins
Let it sit for 10 mins so juices absorb
Serve with rocket, sliced almonds, pumpkin seeds, cherry tomatoes and balsamic vinaigrette.
