The golden girl of Goldenhorse, Kristen Morrell, is stepping out on her own! The gorgie girl has her debut solo album, Ultra Violet, due out in the New Year, and her hot new track Cherry Coloured Dreams is heating up the airwaves!
We caught up with Kristen for the first time in two years (see our previous interview here!), to find out what she's been up to and what she has in store for us...
She's been busy for the past two years... Ultra Violet is my first solo album. I wrote it over a period of eight months, while touring the UK and Germany with Goldenhorse. Then I went back to London and started writing. Half the album was recorded in my brother's lounge in London and half here, in Auckland.
Why Auckland... It was easier - Jol Mulholland is based here who is a fantastic producer... He really helped with the album (Jol co-produced Ultra Violet with Kristen).
Going out on her own for the first time.... The changes is good. I've come up with some stuff I'm really happy with. I'm the same person, just in a different place. After eight years of touring with the band (Goldenhorse) you get alot of the same.
She describes her sound as... New electro-folk.
On the video for 'Cherry Coloured Dreams'... My friend Tru Parahara is actually a choreographer, and we came up with the idea for the video over a girly coffee. It starts off with a gloomy office setting, then I wax lyrical on what it's like to be told to keep working.
What 'Cherry Coloured Dreams' is about... The song is really that - about busting out when you're doing a mundane 9-5 job.
Five fav songs right now... 'Slow Life', Grizzly Bear 'Killing Moon', Echo and Bunnyman 'A Little Bit', TV On The Radio 'Bulletproof', La Roux And anything by Jol Mulholland When it comes to beauty she swears by... Aesop. I totally swear by the Vitamin B & C + Gel. It boosts your skin full of goodness. It's a great monthly treatment. Also Flaxseed Oil is another secret beauty tip. It's brilliant.
When it comes to keeping in shape... I like yoga. Iyengar yoga helps to keep me balanced and fit.
