Meet Red Foo and Sky Blu, together, this hilarious duo make up the electro-hop band LMFAO.
While in town touring with the Black Eyed Peas, we got the chance to catch up with these guys to find out about their new album 'Party Rock', being famous and how they like to get the party started. We even treated them with some NZ Pineapple Lumps and Ginger nuts! I heard your band name came about when Sky Blu was talking to your Grandma online and she said LMFAO, and that’s how the name came about, is that true?Sky Blu: The most important thing when a band is first starting out is the name. I mean we’ve got great music but what are we going to call ourselves? So I said to Foo, “We’ve gotta start with the bare essentials, we have to strip ourselves of everything”, so we looked at ourselves naked in the mirror, and Foo said to me “What do you see?” and I said “My package is bigger than yours”. He then turned to me and said "No, no, no, not that. Don’t look at that, look at the whole thing”. I said “Two sexy dudes”, and that was our band name for a while, “Two Sexy Dudes with Big Packages”. So we told our friends, but they didn’t like it, I mean they were like, well you could just be “Two Humans”... So I told my grandma about our dilemma over iChat, and she was like “LMFAO, you can’t be serious!” and that became our band name for a while; “LMFAO, You Can’t Be Serious!”. But that was too long and we couldn’t get the URL because there were too many characters, so we cut it down to LMFAO and that was that. So what do you tell people who are new to your music? Red Foo: OOOWWWWHHH!..... That usually just sums it all up. For those who think “What the hell was that about?”, we say “We like to party rock and we came to lose control, we came to keep the party people dancing, we’re LMFAO!” And touring with Black Eyed Peas, enjoying it? Any interesting tales to tell? Red Foo: I will say...the after parties do get pretty crazy and it’s interesting to us, because when you’re with the biggest band in the world at the moment, the girls for the most part in these regions, are basically coming to the party to see them, but then they see us, and they go crazy. It’s a weird thing cause we’re so use to attracting so many ladies and I don’t think the Black Eyed Peas were used to that and we’d have all these girls at the after party cause we’d open for them and then they’d come along and sometimes the girls would go to them and sometimes they would stay with us. I mean, just because the Black Eyed Peas came on later, doesn’t mean they should miss out, right? How are you liking NZ? Sky Blu: I love it, I love kiwis. I know that there’s pretty good surf too, I can try doing a New Zealand accent, “I’m gonna DJ on the dicks [meaning decks]”. How do you guys prep for a gig? Any rituals? Red Foo: I do some jumping jacks naked in the mirror. We call them flopjacks, that loosens everything up and gets things swinging. We have a ritual thing that we say, it goes “We love our life, we love our fans, let’s rock this bitch like a one night stand, we love our life, we love our fans, let’s party rock this bitch like a one night stand”. You love the ladies, so tell me, what’s your secret weapon for seducing them? Red Foo: "I am not a whore", before it was a song, it was a line we used with girls cause so many of them would come up to us and grab our booties in the club and they would come up and start grabbing my hair. “Ohh! I love your hair, can I touch it?!” - What?! They already touched it before they even asked. But that didn’t work, we liked them though, they were attractive, so we said we need something, to let them know who we are, but to give them something.
You always want what you don’t have, I mean the saying is you want what you can’t have but I mean you can’t have us, you don’t have us, so I changed that saying officially, you always want what you don’t have. Also sometimes you say you want what you have already...but more of it, like money. A lot of the girls out at these clubs are use to being told how beautiful they are, so when a girl comes up to me I'd say something like “You smell like fish”; ‘treat ‘em mean, keep ‘em keen’ kind of thing, but that was a little too mean, so we easened up a little bit.
What inspires your lyrics? Red Foo: That’s like asking what inspires home depo to make a toolbox for builders? Our songs are tools, they’re like hammers and screw drivers and wretches because every song we use like a tool, like we showed you the “I am not a whore” tool just before, that’s a tool to get the party started. You know I don’t wanna say “Hey guys! Drink up!”, it sounds desperate, so instead we pour a whole bunch of shots. The song 'I Don’t Wanna Be', that was actually a letter that I wanted to write, but I realised I didn’t have any money for postage, but I thought, I can upload it to MySpace for free but that’s what I wanted to communicate to someone. So they are tools of communication devices, so you could buy a cellphone, or you can buy Party Rock the album. What music do you guys listen to? Sky Blu: We like the Micheal J, Rick James, Prince, Steve Johnson, Red Hot Chili Peppers... I like them a lot. Can you improv something for us right now? Red Foo: Alright.... "I like the girls with the big ol’ butts, they like me cuz I’m a ginger nut, they’re tasty when I grab on their hump, they wanna suck on my pineapple lumps. I’m Red Foo, and this is Sky Blu and we came to bring the party to you, Red Foo and Sky Blu..." Sky Blu: "Hot from Australia like a kangaroo all the way to the Newww Zeaaaland. I’m chilling right here and I’m pimpin’ cause my name is Sky, yes I do get high, ON LIFE! Even though I’ve been drinking, girl what you thinking? I see you looking at me like you wanna touch it, I’m not a whore girl, you need to...you know!"
What’s next? Red Foo: We’re writing a TV show, about our lives, could be slightly reality with some funny observations that we have and most likely we’re going to premiere that online at party rock people online, that’s our social network. It’s gonna be a weekly show, it’ll be a mix between Larry David, The Office (the UKversion) and Golden Girls...meets Greese...with a bit of E.R. in there as well.
