Gin Wigmore is one of the hottest nzgirls in the music industry right now. Her debut album, Holy Smoke just dropped on November 19, and is set to be one of the biggest kiwi releases of the year. We caught up with the gorgie 23-year-old, who is now Sydney based to find out what she's been up to...
On the sound of Holy Smoke... It's a mixture kinda like a pick 'n mix bag. There's blues, rock n roll, ballads, soul and folky sounds. There's such a mix because I was determined to give every song a sense of identity. There's nothing worse than an album full of songs that all sound the same.
On recording Holy Smoke in the legendary Capitol Studios in L.A... It was just amazing I still don't know how the f*ck I got in that situation. It just lifted my game to the max. That place was the stomping grounds of Frank Sinatra and Aretha Franklin. It was so surreal to have Rod Stewart recording in the room next to me. I just knew that everything had to be good, and I gave it my best. I just don't know where to go from here! Falling in love with La-La Land (aka Los Angeles)... I'd bulit L.A up in my mind and I was like 'na this is so not my town, it's guna be shit'. But it's awesome! It was amazing live down in Santa Monica and driving over the Malibu Canyon every day to get to work. The night life is amazing. I've gotta live there that way of life is magic! The thing that put her off... I became obessed with needing to buy this and that. I even thought of getting a nose job... Then I realised I don't want to turn into a minga! Fav song on Holy Smoke... It was 'Hey Ho', but it has changed as of last night. 'I Do' is my new fav. With 'Hey Ho' I went through a nasty breakup not long ago, and that song is about putting the ex boy in a grave! 'I Do' is about loving someone who doesn't love you back the story of my life!
Being an nzgirl based in Oz... My home is Sydney for sure. My dog and everything is there. But my real home is where everything is easy; where my family are, is definitley home. I pop across to New Zealand nearly every third week, so I feel like I'm here most of the time anyway! I do miss my mates and family, but I don't miss the weather. Her fav Auckland spot... One Tree Hill is a great picnic spot. I went there the other day with someone I've been seeing...
On this 'someone'... He's so sweet and really cool. We were together in the past but broke up purely because of me moving to Australia, it wasn't a bad breakkup for once! We caught up a couple of months ago and yea.. I call him my 'lover'! Kiwi music she loves... Shapeshifter! And I'm a huge fan of Kora. The Checks - they're phenomal. We have so much good music here, it makes me sad that we don't hear about them overseas.
Five fav breakup songs... I'm a bit retarded, I listen to love songs rather than actual breakup ones in this situation but I'd have to say... 'So Well', Benji Hughes 'Hey Look No Crying', Frank Sinatra 'Green Eyes', Cold Play 'Waterloo Sunset', The Kinks 'Steady As She Goes', White Stripes Best beauty tip... Lipstick wear it, cuz it's awesome. I like MAC St Germain. It's awesome. Also, the black smokey eye.
If she wasn't doing the rockstar thing, she's be... Living in a big ranch, with seven horses, breeding dogs (rotweiler and golden retriver mix) with a hot husband.
