The Art of Coffee Dating

Coffee dates are a fabulous thing – they’re a great way to meet new people, suss them out and get to know them better in a casual, fun way.

Unlike meeting someone for dinner, a quick escape is easier to make. And unlike meeting someone for a drink, there’s no chance of either of you making drunken fools of yourselves!

But when it comes to coffee dates – what are the rules? When you’re out in daylight with a potential newbie and completely sober – it’s hard to blame any mishaps on being too drunk! We've come up with the complete guide to coffee dating and day dates in general, to help ensure your date goes off without a hitch!

1: Getting that date
Pull your nerves together and ask that lucky person for a coffee date! But we're only human afterall, so if you're a little too shy we can understand that. Our solution? Coffee Cupid! Just visit www.thecoffeecupid.com, give him a few details and he’ll do all the hard work by sending an email onto the person you want to go on a coffee date with (keeping you anonymous the entire time). Your secret crush then has an opportunity to guess who you are, and if they get it right Coffee Cupid will shout your coffee date, with a voucher each for coffee at a Gravity coffee café! And if they get it wrong – they’ll never find out who you are and you don’t have to waste any more time on them. You can't lose.

2: Be yourself
When it comes to dating – this is always golden rule numero uno! You want this person to get to know the real you, otherwise things will never work, and of course, if he’s not into the real you, than he’s not worth your time! So shake your nerves and think of this as not a ‘date’, but a ‘coffee date’ – you're just catching up with someone for a coffee!

3: Order what you actually want
You know the stereotypical scene on the movies where the couple goes on a date to a restaurant and the girl only orders a salad? Well the boy always thinks it’s weird and is never impressed. So the lesson here, is always order what it is that you actually want. Same thing with coffee – don’t order a trim soy latte unless that’s what you actually feel like! Order something you love and you’ll find that even if the date is a dud, at least the coffee is good!

4: Dress nicely
It’s a coffee date – don’t wear that hot dress with the insane cleavage and don’t dress like you’re ready for a marathon DVD session in your comfiest trackies! Dress appropriately – think cute, fun and flirty (click here for date outfits for every body type!).

5: A little flirtation is good
Keyword - a little! This is a coffee date, so unlike at a bar, you can’t get away with a huge pash in front of everyone. Keep it PG – think smiles, maybe a little hand brushing but nothing over the top. PDAs when you’ve just met someone are not cool, so wait it out for your next and much more private dates.

6: Pay your date attention
In awkward situations it can be all too easy to use your cellphone as a handy wee distraction device… But don’t do that here! It’srude, you're on the date with him so show him how great you are and use the time to get to know him – you can hide behind your cellphone later!

7: Be honest
There’s nothing worse than someone pretending to like someone – and getting that poor person’s hopes up. So, if you like him, let him know you’re keen to keep in contact. If you have no intention of ever seeing him again – don’t pretend you will! Though remember to be tactful – don’t straight out say “I never want to see you again”, instead focus on how nice it was to meet him (this way your hinting that you’ve meet – and that’s about as far as things will go).

8: The escape plan
If you meet him and find he’s a total dud – don’t just run screaming out of the café! The guy made an effort to meet you, so make sure you pay him the courtesy of at least finishing your coffee and giving him a decent conversation (10-15 mins is probably sufficient). No one likes a rude, stuck up person, so be open and chatty. Even if he’s no Robert Pattinson, he could make an awesome friend. And if he’s just a plain jerk – skull that coffee (or get it take away!).

WIN: Head out on your own coffee date, let Coffee Cupid help you and you could win one of five one month suppies of Gravity Coffee! Click here to find out more…
