As head of wardrobe and makeup for TVNZ, Michiko Hughes is the ultimate stylish nzgirl. Needless to say, she has a knack for spotting a fabulous find, which is exactly why we asked her to share with us her five fav spots in her local hood of Auckland… Milford, Takapuna beach walk I live 10 minutes away from Milford beach and there’s nothing I love more than taking my beautiful dog, Rudy, for a long walk along Milford beach, past Thornes Bay and along the rocks to Takapuna beach.
It is so beautiful around there and with such a wonderful view of Rangitoto Island . It always looks different everyday and I feel so lucky to live around there! Kura Japanese Restaurant Located next to the Town Hall on Queen Street is my fav Japanese restaurant at the moment called Kura. You go down these steps and it’s like you are suddenly transported away to a very, cool little eatery in Tokyo. All the staff are hip, young Japanese folk and really laid back and helpful. The surroundings are rustic and not pretentious and the food is sooo delicious! It’s affordable, home-style Japanese cooking and thoroughly addictive! Bridgeway Movie Theatre This cute theatre is in Northcote Point on the North Shore, just after you get off the harbour bridge. It has a charming old-fashioned vibe about it and it’s great how they have done it up. They always play great movies there with predominantly art house cinematic gems on offer. The café next door, Sausalito, is always great to go to after for a bite to eat or something to drink. I love Northcote Point and also the neighbouring Birkenhead Point with all it’s colonial style villas, wonderful cafes and stunning views of the city and harbour bridge. Bethells Beach (Te Henga)/O’Neil’s Bay This beach is located way out west and is so wild and beautiful, with its black sand in complete contrast to North Shore beaches. I love the journey you make when you physically have to cross an estuary and some amazing black sand dunes to get to O’Neills Bay. Just after you get to the top of the dunes that secret beach is suddenly revealed to you and it truly takes your breath away. It is a very spiritual place and the Maori believe that it is the place where the spirits come back to the shore and you can sense a feeling of supernatural mystery about this area. Dizengoff Café, Ponsonby Road This little café is always bustling and a bit of a haunt where people love to go in the weekends and week days for amazing coffee and such yummy food! I particularly love the ‘avocado” salad stacked with all sorts of delicious veggies and it’s sooo filling! After a great feed and catch up with friends you can then saunter down the road to peruse the cool boutiques! Happy times! Want more Michiko?
