Katie Thompson is an inspiring and hugely talented 22-year-old singer/songwriter from Greymouth, who has landed an opportunity of a lifetime – to record a professional album that’s entirely funded by music fans from New Zealand and around the world...
During NZ Music Month Katie took on – and won – the music competition RaboIdol, run by online savings and investment bank RaboPlus. With prize money and her newfound profile, Katie went on to raise US$50,000 via music site Sellaband. Now, the world is her oyster as she is able to choose a producer, engineer and studio, and have a great time making music! Katie shows how one small event – met with drive, determination and belief in yourself – can spark greater things. Writing to her future self, Katie reminds herself to keep her feet on the ground, her head in the clouds, and to remember the things that made her. So you’re married to the man of your dreams, you have a beautiful home and a couple of kids – oh, and your music career has taken off. You’ve made a couple of music videos, won a Silver Scroll and have worked with some of the finest in the industry. It’s more than you could have ever hoped for. And hey, if it didn’t work out that way – you’ll be fine – there is more of life ahead! Remember your achievements. Musically, you self-funded your debut album and then raised US$50,000 on SellaBand for your next one. I hope you had an amazing time making not only the music, but also the memories that will last a life time. I hope you have learnt to bring balance into your life. Your music is important, but so is spending time with your family and friends. Patience is not a virtue you possess, my dear, but do try with your loved ones. You didn’t know how to do this in your early 20s – let’s hope it’s something you have since developed. Have you learnt to use the word “no” yet? You almost had it down to a fine art, but it still required some tweaking. You show so much empathy towards others – which is a special quality of yours – but remember to tend to your own needs, too. There was so much on your list of ‘things to do’, so I don’t blame you if you haven’t done everything. Remember to take regular breaks – you need an off button woman! Your ambition is your biggest strength, but it can also be your biggest weakness. All in all, if you’ve kept on that path you were creating I’m sure things will be sweet as! Keep that “give it your all” attitude and you’ll always win – whether it’s the outcome you planned for, or not. |
