Simple Smoothies

As the weather warms up, a healthy, cool smoothie makes a perfect pick me up.

Jam-packed with goodness, a smoothie makes a great breakfast, morning snack or lunch on the go. Made with yoghurt, milk and fruit, a smoothie provides a good source of protein, carbohydrates, calcium, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.

Below are our favourite recipes and their nutritional benefits...

Creamy Banana, Yoghurt and Honey Smoothie
Ingredients
1 ripe banana
2 large dessertspoons of unsweetened Greek yoghurt
¼ cup trim milk
1 teaspoon Manuka honey
5 ice cubes

Method
Add all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. This smoothie uses basic ingredients, yet is very delicious, thick and refreshing.

Nutrition quick facts
Yoghurt and milk equals a high in protein, high calcium boost. If you like. Greek yoghurt is thicker than ordinary yoghurt so it gives the smoothie a creamy texture, but with less much fat than a smoothie made with cream or ice cream. Banana is a good source of potassium, and provides fibre and vitamin C.   Manuka honey gives it some natural sweetness as well as providing antibacterial properties.

Tropical Mango Smoothie
½ can Watties mango slices
½ banana
½ cup natural unsweetened yoghurt
½ cup trim milk

Blend all ingredients together in the blender until smooth and creamy.

Nutrition quick facts
Yoghurt and milk make this smoothie high in calcium and protein – great for your bones and to help keep you feeling full. Mango is a good source of of vitamins C and A, both which are antioxidant vitamins. Vitamin C promotes healthy immune function and collagen formation while Vitamin A is important for vision.

Apple and Blueberry Fruit Smoothie
Ingredients
1 apple, peeled, cored and sliced into pieces
1/2 cup of frozen blueberries
½ cup berry yoghurt
½ cup apple juice
1 teaspoon honey

Method
Add all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.

Nutrition quick facts
This smoothie is packed with goodness - antioxidants, vitamin C and is also source of vitamin A, vitamin E, calcium and fibre. They also contain the antioxidant called anthocyanins which give blueberries their dark blue colour. This antioxidant is being researched for possible anti cancer and heart health benefits.

Enjoy!
