Let's face it -- we're really not that good to the environment. Each day, we're adding to landfills and churning through energy - just think of all that food packaging we throw out and our addiction to technology!
Challenge yourself to check out these 10 easy eco tips and be a little greener every day.
Buy local Where you can, choose fruit and vegetables grown in New Zealand rather than produce that has been shipped halfway around the world. Same goes for other products made locally!
Check packaging Buy products whose packaging is either recyclable or made of recycled materials. If you buy fast food, support chains that use recycled or minimal packaging. 3: Go vege for a day Raising animals for meat uses a lot of natural resources. Challenge yourself to go vegetarian for a day each week -- it's much greener, and it'll save you money!
Farewell cling film If you often take a packed lunch (and hurrah if you do!) wrap your food in a recyclable zip-loc bag or lunchbox rather than using cling film.
Take a mug Does your local coffee joint offer a discount if you bring your own mug? Maybe you can convince them to! Disposable coffee cups aren't usually recycled and clog up rubbish bins. 6: Dim your screens If your eyes can handle it, turn down the brightness on your computer screens -- it'll save energy. Also, don't forget to turn your computer screen off when you leave the room or if you're not using it.
Ditch bottled water Tap water never killed anybody, but those plastic bottles aren't so hot for the environment.
Check out the library Rather than buying that book, DVD, magazine, or CD, why not investigate whether or not your local library has it? After all, how often are you going to use it? Borrowing from the library will also save you money.
Fill your fridge Your refrigerator will run most efficiently if it's full (but not overstuffed). If it's starting to look empty, fill jugs or recycled bottles with water and pop them in -- the chilled water will help to keep your fridge cold and, as a result, use less power.
Decline bags Shop assistants tend to be on autopilot when it comes to bagging your purchases. But do you really need one for that mascara? Turn down bags whenever you can, and shop at supermarkets that don't provide them, like Pak 'N Save -- use their recycled cardboard boxes instead.
