The Best and Worst Pick-up Lines

The pick-up lines that guys use on girls are famous for being cringeworthy. Yes, girls tend to be more subtle in their approach -- but some of the lines we use are total duds! Find out which of our methods are just lame, and which just might work...

1: 'My friend thinks you're hot!'
Getting your best friend to approach the guy you have your eye on avoids the embarrassment of finding out that he's not into you or already taken. But is that really the impression that you want to give -- being too nervous to approach him yourself? Even if your friend gets his number, it's still going be awkward the first time you make contact.

Verdict: Lame. Soooo intermediate school.

2: 'You look like a challenge.'
This line has a lot of potential -- to be really, really corny. Delivered in the right way, however, it could spark a flirty exchange. It's best served with a mischievous grin and a big dose of confidence -- and maybe after a couple of drinks on both your and his part. Most of all, be light-hearted about it.

Verdict:
Risky. Requires attitude.

3: 'I like your [...]'
Complimenting someone is one of the best ways of striking up a conversation. Extra points if you manage to pick up on something unique about them - rather than, 'I like your hair,' go for 'I like your Federation shirt - aren't they awesome?' You might discover that you share interests or hobbies!

Verdict:
OK. Can't go wrong.

4: 'Do you have a girlfriend?'
Points for being direct! Sure, it could result in an immediate rebuff, but for those who want to get straight down to business, it means you avoid the flirtatious-fishing-for-information stage. Many people have noted that, as far as guys go, the less subtle you are the better...

Verdict:
Risky. Requires thick skin.

5: 'Have we met before?'
Yes, it's a way of striking up a conversation, but most people will recognise this as a pick-up line -- unless you actually have met before! It could also result in serious awkwardness if the guy's response is, 'Um, no.'

Verdict:
Lame. Try something else.

6: 'What are you doing later this weekend?'
Slip this into the middle of a conversation with a guy to hint at a possible future meet-up -- or date. If he picks up on the hint, he has the opportunity to invite you out -- if not, you might have to ditch the subtlety and go with, 'Hey, want to get together later this weekend?'

Verdict:
Good. Worth a shot.
