Secrets to Weight loss Success - Why You Need More than Willpower

Willpower is defined as the trait of resolutely controlling ones behaviour. Many think this is the key to weight loss, and blame themselves for not being strong enough to say no to old bad eating patterns. However, the good news is if you’ve failed before, willpower isn’t all you need! The key to weight loss (along with good nutrition and exercise) is breaking bad habits and creating healthy habits. Here’s how to do it. 1. Review what you find hardest in weight loss  Take a look back at previous weight loss attempts and list the things you’ve found difficult and stopped you from losing weight, for example it could be Friday night drinks and nibbles, or stress eating after a bad day at the office. 2. Write down a strategy It’s important to be prepared, so when you are in the situations that have stumped you in the past, you have an action plan and know how to handle the situation. Think out what would help you get through tough situations, set yourself limits on something, rather than depriving yourself altogether.  For example: Issue: I find I eat too many nibbles and have too many drinks on Friday night after work. Strategy: Have something to eat before drinks so I’m not starving when go to drinks. Allow myself two small wines and drink water or diet coke in between. Chose two nibbles and have those only in a small amount. 3. Imagine successfully handling tricky situations It might sound a bit silly, but visualising successfully handling a situation you normally struggle with is a really good way of getting through it when it happens in real life. Visualising success is used by athletes to reach their goals and there’s no reason why it can’t also be used to help slimmers.  For example, your friend always pressures you to have a piece of cake when she does. Find a quiet place and imagine the situation in detail. Imagine you being strong and saying no, no matter how much she pressures. This technique really works and will help you get through difficult situations – like they say – practice makes perfect! Combining these techniques, along with a healthy diet and some physical activity, will help you reach your goal weight – through the power of skillpower rather than willpower. Nicola, Nutritionist
