What’s hot this month? We give you a sneak peek at the hottest albums to be released, and give you a chance to win some of our favs! Jordin Sparks, Battlefield A moody little album, Jordin Sparks follows in the angst of fellow idol winner Kelly Clarkson in the love-cynic department. Slick production does nothing to mask a half baked second half, however there is enough radio-friendly material on here to carry Sparks – just not distinguish her. Going for some snazzy electro numbers and big ballads, one wonders why she moved into the very crowded dance-pop scene rather than cultivate fans from the more urban influenced ‘No Air’. That’s not to say it’s bad, just a little passé in places.

Regina Spektor, Far It’s been a while since we’ve heard from Ms Spektor but you’ll be pleased to hear she is still in fine form. An intelligent, dreamy sounding, loveable album and artist, this album quite simply has all the little bits and pieces that makes Regina and her work...work. Quirky in places, beautiful in others, always clever, always distinctive, Regina’s eccentric nature and talent combine to make a peculiarly irresistible album where pop smarts meet adventure.

La Roux, Self Titled High pitched, cutting, shrill – La Roux front woman Elly Jackson definitely has a unique sound. It’s also surprisingly addictive. Penned as ones to watch, La Roux is one of the more dedicated disciples to the 80s sound that seems to be crushing the airwaves of late. Dedicated yes, dated, no, just like Elly’s distinctive bright red tiff these guys are still fire-burning hot, bringing a fresh and modern take on all that synth. Keeping the plus’ coming, perhaps what’s most appealing is the down-to-earth nature of the album. Unlike the Lady Gaga’s and Girls Aloud of the world, there is nothing cheap looking or sounding about Elly Roux or her stellar debut record.
J. Williams, Young Love Declaring in the intro just how much this album means to him, the honesty and good kiwi hard yaker that’s gone into it, it’s clear from the outright this album has a burning drive and passion behind it. That drive continues throughout the record with soulful vocals and swoon-worthy smooth beats. While commendable what has been achieved, J. Williams is not what one would define as unique. This equates to some cheesy and bland moments mixed into what is otherwise an honest and easy-going collection of songs.
Various Artists, Birds of Paradise An album of sweet tracks from the local kiwi birds, this is one compilation album worth owning. With some well known acts and some yet-to-be-discovered gems, this is a beautiful and thoughtful collection of songs rather than just a recycle of chart-topping, money-spinning hits (not that money spinning is something traditionally associated with NZ music, but comparatively speaking). Featuring the likes of Fur Patrol, Gin Wigmore, Anika Moa, Goldenhorse and many more, this is an album by the girls (but not necessarily just for the girls) that showcases some amazing local talent we can all be proud of.
