Forget Facebook. The new social networking phenomenon sweeping the world is simpler—and far more cute. Over a million people are signed up already, including many high-profile celebrities and musicians - even Nicole Richie and Lady Gaga!
If you haven't heard about the Twitter phenomenon, aren't really sold on the whole concept or just aren't really sure how to use it, we've come up with simple Twitter 101 guide to help you figure it out...
Tell the world what’s going on
Twitter simply involves updating a comment, thought, feeling, or opinion as often or as infrequently as you like. Some people update (or ‘tweet’) every hour; some every few days. (It’s basically like the ‘status update’ function on Facebook.) It has to be short, as the maximum message length is 140 characters. You can also post links to websites and draw people’s attention to things you like.
Keep tabs on stars and friends alikeOn Twitter you have ‘followers’ rather than friends, and you can also choose to follow whomever you like. Many celebrities have jumped on the Twitter bandwagon, including Lady Gaga, Lily Allen, Ashton Kutcher, Nicole Richie, and nzgirl style heroine Gala Darling—just to name a few! You can send comments to users simply by adding the @ symbol to their name (eg: @ladygaga Love the bubble dress).
Watch the drama unfold before youTwitter is kind of like reality television. Most users ‘tweet’ several times a day—many via their mobile phones—which results in Twitter being much more fast-paced than other networking platforms. When a plane crash-landed in the Hudson River in New York City several months ago, people had uploaded pictures of it onto Twitter before the media even arrived at the scene.
What are you waiting for?Getting started on Twitter is easy - head to www.twitter.com, come up with a catchy username and away you go! Optional, but recommended is to also upload a small picture of yourself. Because Twitter stores very little information (you don’t even have to supply your full name if you don’t want to), it’s much safer to belong to than Facebook, Myspace or Bebo.
Connect with others on the go
To get in on the action, find some people to follow! Let Twitter search your email address book to see if any of your contacts are already signed up, or search on the site for your favourite celebrities.
