Superstar Heath Ledger was a legend for so many reasons; not only was he a great actor but an incredible person, we've found out ten things you didn't know about Heath...
Heath was a talented hockey player, selected for his state’s Under 17 squad and praised as an up-and-coming athlete. However, when it became too difficult to juggle both hockey and drama, he abandoned the sport in order to focus his energy on acting.
He was best buddies with fellow Aussie Russell Crowe.
He chose to take drama classes at school because the only alternative was cooking classes, and he didn’t see himself as much of a chef!
He was named after the darkly romantic male lead in Emily Bronte’s famed gothic novel, ‘Wuthering Heights’.
In one of his first screen roles, he played a gay cyclist. When offered the choice between playing the cyclist or a swimmer, he chose the first option because he believed that, in order to succeed as an actor, he should take unusual, stand-out roles.
He was no stranger to Italian restaurants - his favourite food was risotto.
Painfully shy, he once got terrible stage fright before presenting an award, and giggled the whole way through his speech.
He said that he preferred to date older women, because they tended to act younger than their age, and he was frustrated with younger girls trying to act older.
His first acting role was as Peter Pan, at the age of 10.
Heath once said about acting that, “I only do this because I'm having fun”. He added later that portraying the Joker in The Dark Knight was the most fun he’d had in his career.
