Boh Runga has just released her debut solo album, Right Here.
Ramarea caught up with the gorgie LA based nzgirl while she was back in NZ, for a girly chat about her music, her beautiful jewellery line and of all things, Twilight!
So, what made you move to LA?
My music publishing company is in LA – so it was a decision that’s all about the music. I had visited LA before and really liked it. I’ve been there for a year and a half, and I’ll probably stay another year. It’s so nice and sunny and everyone I’ve met over there is wonderful. There’s also alot more opportunities over there – like I went to Coachella, a big music festival and got to see The Killers, Paul McCartney, MIA, The Ting Tings – it was fantastic! Any exciting celeb encounters? I saw Paris Hilton and Ryan Seacrest out at a bar one night. They were literally just a booth away from us. It was one of the moments where I really wished I had some of my jewellery on me to give to her – to be like ‘Hi Paris, here’s a present!’. She’s really pretty and not snotty – she looks really approachable. Any new plans for your jewellery range? We’ve got the new line coming out in May (pictured above) and I’m actually thinking about doing versions for guys. I’ve already made a wing bracelet for one of my guy mates (Ramarea’s note: no less than Whale Rider’s Cliff Curtis!). It’s something I just want to suss out first though...
What’s your fav piece in your jewellery collection? My fav piece for the longest time has been the fantail earrings.
What was it working solo for the first time? It was strange – I’ve known the Stellar boys for ten years. It was very different without them being there. When you’re in a band you rely alot on others for support and opinions. This time everything was different – I even sung different! I enjoyed it, it was s nice difference. How would you describe Right Here? Not sad, but quite big in that the themes are about love found and love lost. Someone said to me that it sounds ‘kinda happy, but the themes are quite dark’, which is probably true. Fav song? ‘This Old Heart’. It’s all about wishing someone well. It’s also my fav because it’s quite high in my range and I have to concentrate. It’s not necessarily just a ‘sing-sing’ song. Your gorgeous - what are your beauty secrets? I love Dermalogica, Dr LeWinns and MAC. My best tip? Hmm... If you want to have perfect skin – don’t go out! Alcohol is hard for your body to process and it really takes its toll. However I don’t really follow that – but it’s all about moderation. Plus exercise – it’s good for stress. Fav designers? I’m all about a bargain! I love good outlet stores and vintage stores. However I’m also lucky that I have some great friends who are also fabulous designers – Kate Sylvester, Juliette Hogan... It really depends on my mood. My fav pair of jeans are from Stolen Girlfriends Club, a woman actually stalked me around one day in LA, she wanted to know where I got them from! I also love Kathryn Wilson shoes; they are very affordable, cute, current and wearable. What’s one thing that you still have left to achieve... I can’t speak Maori or Chinese (Boh’s father is Maori and her mother is Chinese). I would like to learn. What’s on your iPod right now? I’m loving Paramore – the song from Twilight, 'Decode'. She’s such a good singer. Also I love the Twilight movie – it’s just so adorable! I’m sure every young girl wants a vampire boyfriend after watching that! I also love White Lies, ‘Lets Grow Old Together At the Same Time’, The Gutter Twins and ‘The Way I Are’, by Timaland and Keri Hilson - it's just such a great dance song! Right Here is out now and you can find out more about Boh's gorgeous jewllery line at www.nzmintjewellery.com. Ramarea |
