So you’re beginning to realize that there are better things to do than spend another night cuddling in front of the Saturday night feature? Unfortunately when we get into a long-term relationship, we can sometimes forget about the outside world. If you want to revive your relationship and reclaim the active life you once had, there are some ways you and your man can get back into the swing of socializing… Double date This is an easy way to socialize if you have friends who are coupled up. Double dating means no one feels like a third wheel, and if the couple chemistry is right, you can potentially make a lasting friendship. If you haven’t met a friend’s partner yet, why not set up a double date and see how it goes? Or go out with some existing friends – you may find that they are just as eager as you to get out of the house! Throw a party You don’t need to be having a birthday, engagement or housewarming to throw a party. By inviting people over for drinks and nibbles, you can reconnect with old friends, make new acquaintances, and open yourself up to future social invitations. Join a class or group Joining an evening class together is a great way to socialise and learn a new skill at the same time. Try taking up dance lessons, or check out your local school for community education classes on a range of topics including cooking, arts and crafts, languages, and wine tasting. If you want to connect with people in your community, joining your local church is an easy way to extend your circle of friends, or you could try joining a local sports team as a fun way to stay active while meeting new people in your area. Volunteer Why not help out your favourite cause and make friends at the same time? There are plenty of volunteering opportunities throughout New Zealand; consider Youthline, your local SPCA, a conservation group, or help to fundraise money for a charity in need. Get out more Simply by getting out more, you’re opening yourself up to new experiences and people. If you and your man have a friendly and open attitude, it’s easy to socialize, whether it’s at a bar, a music festival, or a friend’s party. Try and make an effort to get out of the house every weekend and do something interesting. Newspapers and the internet are an easy way of finding out about events that are going on in your city, where you can meet like-minded people. Couples are often more approachable than large groups or individuals, so use this to your advantage and start a conversation. Kayla Langhorne |
