Welsh singing siren Duffy has landed in NZ! The nzgirl team were lucky enough to check out the gorgie girl's Auckland show on Tuesday night. Was she as good as everyone says? What's she like in real life? Ramarea gives us the lowdown...
The Duffy... Duffy might be blonde, tiny and pretty, but there’s something that sets this Welsh bombshell apart from every other pop wannabe trying to climb the charts – her voice.
We’ve all heard it oozing through the radio, that kooky, unique and piercing voice that sounds like nothing you’ve ever heard. Although her records sound amazing, it’s the kind of voice that seems to good to be true. But if you’ve ever heard the foxy 24-year-old live, you’ll know that it’s totally authentic and possibly even better, when she’s pumping those vocals straight out of her mouth.
What did she do?
Duffy mesmerized her Auckland crowd from start to finish. The crowd was made up of an eclectic bunch – from nanas and granpa’s, daddy’s and daughters right through to rowdy girls (and boys) after a wicked night out. The fact that Duffy could make every jaw in the house drop with just a few shrills, is testament to her amazing voice.
Proving she’s more than just a ‘sit down and sing’ kind of gal, Duffy brought a fun, saucy show down to NZ. With her sassy 60s style shimmies, struts and microphone swings, it was like a mini trip back in time. She even had two cute backup dancers to give her a little more oomph, and her demure outfits and beehive helped top off the old school theme. The whole show was all about attitude and soul, rather than full blown special effects, and it was all that was needed.
Highlights of the night? Everyone has their fav Duffy song; she’s got a love tune about every heart ache imaginable, so there's at least one song we can all relate to! Whether she was seducing the crowd with sexy, smooth lines from ‘Syrup & Honey’, teasing with the flirty ‘Serious’ or unleashing her killer voice with the haunting ‘Stepping Stone’, this girl knows how to keep the crowd hooked on her. Her debut hit, ‘Mercy’ rocked the crowd off their seats, while ‘Warwick Avenue’ got heads swaying. She managed to keep a crowd of six, loud-mouthed nzgirls
quiet, under her spell and totally impressed for over an hour - no easy feat!
The verdict? In just one year, Duffy has sold six million copies of her debut album Rockferry and nabbed her very own Grammy (Best Pop Vocal Album). If you weren't sure about her success before, check her out live in concert - you'll be sold!
