Jade Adnet is an 18 year-old Londoner who was recently tasked with showing five Kiwis some of the more alternative sides of the UK through www.altalbion.co.nz. We got Jade to take us through all of her fav hot spots, from the best clubs to the most popular art and fashion destinations...
I grew up in the UK and I’m lucky enough to have relative proximity to a lot of the luxuries British cities have to offer. But there’s one particular thing I don’t know if I could live without: the London Markets. There are dozens of vibrant markets happening all over London with all kinds of bargains to be had. Food, music, literature, fashion and even just obscure and interesting trinkets – these places offer a wonderful alternative to traipsing the high street. Here are my four favorites… Camden MarketLocated in the infamous center for alternative culture in North London, Camden market is a regular pilgrimage for many an English youngster. There’s a vast selection of things you can pick up here, but it’s particularly good for clothes, jewellery and collectors’ items. The market covers a large area and has a number of distinct sections, each with its own character, atmosphere and selection of exotic goods.
Much like Camden itself, the market offers something for all and caters to many different walks of life. I go there to pick up unique accessories, as there are heaps of ‘one off’ items up for grabs. Covent GardenBased in the bustling centre of London, there is always something happening here. Street entertainers are a usual attraction, as well as the ‘indoor’ market, covered by a glass roof, which houses boutiques, cafés and arts-and-crafts stalls. Ever-popular with London’s tourists, the area attracts a steady flow of novel performers; indeed you never quite know what kind of entertainment you may discover here. The nearby side streets are also home to some particularly charming cafés and restaurants. Spitalfields/Sunday Up MarketSpitalfields Market is centered in the East End of London between the vintage shops, galleries, pubs and graffiti art of trendy Shoreditch and the nearby spic and span outlets of Liverpool Street. It’s a great place to pick up antiques and collectables of all kinds. The nearby Sunday Up Market offers wonderful food amongst a regular clothing bonanza. You’re as likely to turn up a complete gem as something utterly bizarre!
I find the East End to be more of a ‘have a nose around and see what you discover’ type of place. It’s one of the more fashionable places to pick up a bargain, though and with a bit of practice, it can become an indispensable resource for any self-respecting London hipster! Brixton MarketSet in South London in the heart of Caribbean London, Brixton market is a regular event for the local community and a truly organic cultural experience. For any foodies the breathtaking selection of fresh exotic produce on offer should be a particularly exciting prospect. The arcade houses some fantastic independent restaurants, authentic Colombian, Jamaican cuisine and a quaint and loveable deli or two, while often outside barbeques are set up with speakers blaring reggae music.
The fresh-cooked West Indian food on offer is a cheap and delicious treat. I call it feel good food. They offer a great selection, including the classics and favorites such as rice and peas, jerk chicken, patties and curry goat. A great place to enjoy the feel and tastes of the Caribbean with a distinctly London twist! (607).jpg) |
