After a little bit of inspiration? The nzgirl spill on their favourite women who march to their own drum. Take a lesson from these fabulous ladies and stand tall, stand strong and don’t let anything hold you back!
Why she's my pick: When I was in the UK Jade Goody was the butt of all Reality TV jokes. Painted as a ditsy Essex girl the media loved following her misadventures. However, in the last year Jade was diagnosed with terminal cervical cancer. She has been the bravest woman, embracing her place in the media eye and making a documentary about her last days, her wedding and her struggle. Her reason being two fold; one to educate others about cervical cancer and the second to try and earn as much as she can for her children before she passes away.
Why she’s my pick: She is one of the world’s most successful fashion designers, and my personal favourite. Vivienne Westwood is an inspiration to any punk, protester, fashion designer, illustrator, artist or style maven, after all she has done it all. To me it’s all this that makes her amazingly inspirational. And the fact that she has managed to achieve so much without sacrificing who she is and what she stands for – a woman that has done it all on her own terms.
Why she’s my pick: Not only is she an amazing artist she is a real do-gooder! She does a lot of charity work, in particular for World Vision. She is also very stylish and a lovely person. I haven’t met her personally (though I would love too) but I have heard her speak and perform numerous times.
Why she's my pick: It can’t have been an easy path to follow – all those early mornings and excruciating training programmes, not to mention disappointments along the way, but the Evers-Swindell twins reached the heights of excellence in their chosen career(s). They gave their fans and supporters an enormous amount of pleasure along the way, and their acceptance speech at the 2008 Halberg Trust Awards was absolutely delightful! That sort of commitment really is awe-inspiring.
Why she's my pick: I admire her resilience and determination to survive and succeed in the fashion industry. She’s taken her brand to the world, and with it – New Zealand. Young designers today can take a leaf out of Karen Walkers book (beautifully designed I’m sure) and set about achieving greatness by sheer will and determination.
