Off Kilter Style: Challenging Trends for Winter

Every season there are some trends that come along which make us go “hmm”. It’s not that we don’t like them, often we warm to them and become passionate advocates, but more they’re so outside of what we wear every day that it can be a little scary. Do you take them, do you leave them or do you try and work them into your wardrobe in a subtle way? We picked four of the left of centre trends for autumn/ winter and found some mega hot buys for you to get the look at home.

Shiny Sequins
Inspiration: Blugirl
This look can so easily sway over into “that is a rather interesting look you have there” territory. When it comes to the world of the shiny little sequin, it’s best to keep it to the details. That said, the fringed mini skirt is hot buying for the fashion brave and would be very cute with flats and a basic soft tee.

1: Vesty $259.99 from Moochi
2: Joni Fringed Mini Skirt $349.00 from Good as Gold
3: Ladkah Top $89.90 from Lippy

Hello Harem Pants
Inspiration: Armand Basai
Harem pants are the pant of the season, so even for those on the fence about this little garment, it’s going to be hard to escape their grip. But how to make it work? Let’s just say that these will be mostly challenging, and softening that challenge is a little hard. Rock them in their full glory or leave them alone, harem pants are not the garment for the unsure.

1: Denham Chambray Jean $356 from asos
2: Dragica Pant $139.00 from Max
3: Tsar Harem Pant $80.00 from dotti

Fun Fringing
Inspiration: Gaspard Yurkievich
You could be safe and get a fringed handbag; a little more challenging is a fringed bootie or shoe. But to get it right, and embrace the trend, it has to be a dress or top emblazoned with some true fringe.

1: Mink Pink Eagle Top $40.00 from Wild Pair
2: Shimmy Dress $139.00 from Moochi
3: Twenty Seven Names Bangs Singlet Dress $149.00 from Good As Gold

Oh 80s Lace
Inspiration: Camilla Staerk
There is lace, and then there is lace. 80s lace is always the same - sheer, wispy, black and exposing lots of skin underneath. It’s a hard look to pull off, but when it’s done right it looks amazing. Simple tip, lace leggings are your friend – pair with heavy boots and a woollen dress.

1: Mink Pink top $79.90 from Wild Pair
2: Doll House tights $59.90 from Lippy
3: Lace Dress $80.00 from Dotti
