Ever wondered about the virtues of mineral makeup? We give you the lowdown on the world of mineral makeup and how to get the best look. We even have a video tutorial to help you out!
So what is mineral makeup? It seems mineral make up is everywhere at the moment, so what makes it the next big beauty buzz? Well, it’s what isn’t in it that is the key; mineral makeup is pared back to the essentials. That pot of mineral makeup doesn’t contain a lot of ingredients commonly found in other foundations. So what are these formulations without? Less or no talc at all to help prevent pore clogging or a chalky makeup finish. Good formulations will also contain no oil or fragrances, making them perfect for sensitive or problem skin. Mineral makeup also uses naturally occurring mineral pigments so shades are more natural. Products like Maybelline New York Mineral Power Foundations have triple refined minerals to provide better affinity with your skin and natural, bendable coverage.
Building your mineral makeup kit
Want to build your own mineral makeup kit and want to know what to look out for when buying mineral foundation? Check the percentage of minerals - does the product contain talc? If so, how much? Look for oil and fragrance free products and make sure your mineral foundation has an SPF rating – essential for the harsh New Zealand sun!

How do I get my mineral makeup looking fantastic?
When it comes to the powder formulations, a few simple tricks will give you great results. Firstly take your pot of mineral powder, invert it and give it a little shake, turn right-side up, tap the lid and then unscrew. The residue in the lid of your mineral powder pot will be more than enough to get started! Swish your kabuki brush around the inside of the lid, tap off the excess then buff onto the face in smooth, circular movements. If the finish is a little heavy, don’t worry; simply take your clean kabuki brush and buff off the excess until the finish is smooth and fine.
Liquid formulations are just as easy to apply, simply apply in dots over the face ( we suggest a dab on the nose, two small dabs on the cheekbones, one on the forehead and one on the chin. Blend downward with fingertips over the face working from the inside to the outside, to get the best, most even result.
