Feel like stress is taking over? Relax! We’ve got easy stretches to kick the stress monster into touch.
Legs up the wall stretch This stretch is great for getting blood flowing and for loosening those tight muscles down the back of your legs. Lie down with your butt against a wall (or as close as you can get). Extend your legs up the wall and flex your toes, so that your feet are parallel to your body – think about getting your knees straight and feel the stretch in your hamstrings. Hey, why not have a little nap while you’re down there – super-stress relieving.
Downward dog A yoga classic, this pose will stretch legs, back and shoulders whilst strengthening your core and increasing flexibility! Start on your hands and knees, wrists underneath your shoulders and knees underneath hips, curl toes under and push back raising your hips and straightening your legs. Spread your fingers wide on the ground and lift and push with your arms through your shoulders to support your back. Let your head relax, moving your shoulder blades outward. Breathe in and out for five counts before relaxing and slowly sinking to the floor.
Knees to chest This one is great for stretching out that tired back – do it in front of the TV and hold it for a few minutes, it’s super-relaxing. Lie on your back, pull one knee, then the other into your chest, relax your head and give them a good hug. If the mood takes you, rock from side to side; it’ll help articulate your spine. Breath deeply and with each exhalation allow your back to relax a little more.
Child stretch This is another great move for giving your spine a good stretch out, plus it’s amazingly restful and will boost your circulation. Kneel on a mat or rug, with your butt resting on your heels (your knees should be about hip width apart). Place your forehead on the floor and bring your arms forward, so they are stretched out in front of you. Breathe deeply and think about your spine gently stretching.
