We love mini dresses, skirts and shorts; but how do you make them work for winter? We tackle the tricky topic and show you how to get the most wear out of your minis even when the weather gets cooler... Ultra Mini
The ultra mini will be alive and strong for winter 2009, and whilst the celeb set might be brave enough to tackle it sans stockings, back here hosiery is the safest bet. I love how Emma created a great silhouette with its Air New Zealand Fashion Week Show, pairing their aubergine coloured wrap tunic with some gorgeous grey stockings. Zoey Deschanel paired her ultra mini dress with some sheer white stockings, whilst the black and red ensemble is from Project Runway.
Bare Legged Mini
If you aren’t brave enough to go for the ultra mini, regular mini lengths are great for trans seasonal wear and into winter. With a little more fabric to play with we can show off bare legs. Just make sure they are up to the show, by keeping up with your exfoliation and hair removal regime through the winter. And make sure to use a great moisturiser; luminous varieties will help even out skin tone. If your legs are still suffering from a little chill, take a leaf out of Karen Walker and Rachel Comey’s books and pair your mini with some cute ankle socks or a great calf biting boot. Bare legged sexyness and practicability in one!
Keep it balanced
If you are going short below, make sure to keep up top balanced. Pair your mini skirt with a little more volume and fabric on top to avoid looking to bare in the winter months. I love the way that Amada Bynes did it in her little black dress. The long sleeves balance out the short length perfectly, and the shoe is heavy enough to add some weight to the feet – perfect for a wintery night out. My other favourite thing to do is balance out the shortness with drama, the black skirt and white shirt look from Anne Sofie Back is a great example of this in practice.
