nzgirl Picks: Fav Kiwi Athletes

Last night we ‘oohed’ and ‘aaahed’ as the 2008 Westpac Halberg Awards were handed out to NZ’s finest athletes.

We now know who the experts picked as their favs, we’ve asked you who your picks are and now we’re going to share the nominees that we love with you!

Anya, Beauty and Fashion Manager
My pick is: Sophie Pascoe (swimming)
Nominated for: Westpac New Zealand Sportswoman of the Year
Because: A talented sportswoman and a world renowned Paralympian. I’ve seen countless interviews with this girl and always come away inspired, I love her approach to challenges and her winning attitude!

Isla, Flossie Content Producer
My pick is: Hayden Roulston (cycling)
Nominated for: Westpac New Zealand Sportsman of the Year
Because: He overcame experiencing problems with his heart to win two medals at last year’s Olympics, what a star!

Eric, Flossie Network Manager
My pick is: All Blacks (rugby)
Nominated for: Westpac New Zealand Sports Team of the Year
Because: An embarrassing world cup defeat, a coach under fire, half the starters headed overseas; who thought they could win the Tri-nations, the Bledisloe Cup, and be voted IRB team of the year? They did. They didn’t let the low expectations or opinions of others get in their way!

Ramarea, nzgirl Editor
My pick is: Valerie Vili (athletics)
Nominated for: Westpac New Zealand Sportswoman of the Year
Because: She’s one kick ass nzgirl! Valerie is only 24 and already has her very own shiny and amaze Olympic Gold medal, as well as a huge list of other outstanding achievements. No matter how young you are, she proves you can do anything you set your mind too!

Vicky, Account Manager
My pick is: The Kiwis (league)
Nominated for: Westpac New Zealand Sports Team of the Year
Because: A tough decision as in my eyes there are two leading contenders for this... The twins (Evers-Swindell) for their Olympic triumph and the Kiwis. My pick however would have to be the Kiwis! These boys stuck in there despite the lack of support from many and turned a losing first half in to an amazing triumph. A hard fought season and final game - what a great effort! They really showed the passion and commitment they have for the team, the game, and NZ! We can’t really ask for more.

Tee, Editor in Chief
My pick is: The Kiwis (league)
Nominated for: Westpac New Zealand Sports Team of the Year
Because: To think, not too long ago the boys were getting beaten left, right and centre including a 58-0 downtrou against the Aussies in 07. But not in 2008. The dark horses bolted out of the gate and quietly worked their way through the rounds to face the Kangaroos in the finals, taking the throne as world champions in a historic 34-20 whipping in Brisbane!

Take that All Blacks! My only hope is that the boys dress like winners on the night – and get their just desserts, another trophy for the cabinet.
