As we grow, become pregnant, gain weight or simply have hormonal imbalances, stretch marks can appear. But fortunately, the nasty little red lines are not as bad as you may think.
We've come up with a complete guide to preventing, dealing and disguising them so you can get on with worrying about the more important things in life!
What are they?Stretch marks (medically known as striae gravidum) can arise through quick growth in puberty, a stretched belly area in pregnancy or gained weight. They tend to appear on the breasts, thighs, hips and bum. They are said to be caused by a tearing of the dermis when skin is overstretched and the normal production of collagen in the skin is disrupted.
The elastic fibres in the skin are damaged and the body cannot fully repair them. There is also research suggesting they caused by hormone imbalance rather than skin stretching, which could explain why you have them if you have not gained weight. Avoiding themStretch marks are difficult to prevent but with regular exercise and toning of the stomach muscles and core area, they are less likely to appear. Of course, that can all change with pregnancy but the good news is they pose no health risk. You can also try massaging natural oils containing wheat germ, jojoba or Vitamin E on affected areas to help heal the epidermis and fading of the colour. Making them less noticeable Before you consider something like laser treatment, remember that stretch marks fade to hardly noticeable shiny, light coloured lines after time so oils that help speed up this process can be a better option. If the marks are really bad and you’re serious about removing stretch marks, laser treatment is available through some skincare clinics, but it pays to do plenty of research and talk to your doctor before inquiring. Laser treatment reduces redness and induces collagen growth (the component that keeps skin taut). The procedure is said to only hurt a bit and swelling lasts a few days. Microdermabrasion is another option that doesn’t require surgery. It uses a pen-like device to emit crystals that accelerate collagen and skin cell production. A session usually lasts 30 minutes and patients attend these several times. Like laser treatment, it’s best to consult your doctor, do a bit of googling on the subject and shop around. A cream or oil like Bio Oil is an easier option to speed up the fading process of stretch marks. Simply rub the oil on areas of scarred skin (but not broken skin) once a day and the lines will hopefully improve. Dealing with themSo you’ve still got them? Why not hide them through clever clothing choices. If you’re hoping to wear a bikini this summer without showing your stretch marks try going for a sexy one-piece (such as a strapless sort), wearing boy shorts or board shorts or even throwing on a pretty kaftan when you’re not in the water. Hide them and forget about them! Remember that almost everyone has them or has had them at one point; they’re of no health risk AND they fade after time anyway. It could be worse! Holly
