Somehow we’ve all come to believe that we must pay an expensive gym membership to get fit. However we’ve been conned! Here’s some low cost ways to get fit and tone up at home without spending a fortune...
Walking/Jogging
Everyone knows a cheap cardiovascular workout is to get outdoors and pound the pavements. Walking and running are a great way to get fit with no cost. For extra motivation to get fit, sign up for an event. Check out SUB series for a 5, 10 or 21km run or walk. There are also bike ride events too.
Try the Nike+ Sportsband kit for extra motivation. Simply purchase the kit, place the sensor in your shoe and get moving. You can then track calories burned, time, distance and pace online. Check it out here.
Getting outdoors for exercise is great when the weather is good, but most of us aren’t that keen that we’d go out when it was pouring with rain. Here’s what you can do in the comfort of your own home.
Skipping
A skipping rope costs under $20 and is one of the best ways to get fit fast. Relive your childhood and try all the moves you used to at school – you’ll tone your legs, bum and arms at the same time.
Skipping is a strenuous exercise – to start with try skipping for 30 seconds then jogging on the spot for a minute before skipping again. As you get fitter you’ll be able to build up the time spent skipping.
Workout DVDs
Whatever you are into, you’ll be able to get it on DVD – from hip hop to line dancing to aerobics. Check out Trade Me for exercise DVDs or Whitcoulls and find something you’ll enjoy.
Swiss Ball
Swiss balls are popular in gyms but not expensive to buy to have at home. The benefit of exercising on a ball is that the body hasto use many more muscles than if working on a flat surface as it must responds to the instability of the ball to remain balanced. The muscles used become stronger over time to keep balance.Check out this link for exercises you can do on your Swiss ball at home.
Resistance Bands
Resistance bands are a type of stretchy tubing used to carry out resistance exercise (As the name suggests!) They are a cheap alternative to buying dumbbells and as a bonus they are portable so you can take them with you when travelling. They can be found at most sports shops. This site has a range of exercises that will tone your body.
So for under $100 you can buy a range of equipment to keep you fit and toned – all without having to set foot within a gym!
