This year’s Rhythm & Vines was the place to bring in 2009! Liselle, our music guru, was there to check it out and get up and close and personal with some of the festival’s hottest stars.
Whether you want to know what was going on behind the scenes at R&V or are gutted you mised out, this is the place to get your fix. In part 2 of our R&V special, we've got Liselle's interviews with The Datsuns, Carl Cox and the gorgeous Anika Moa...
The Datsuns They put NZ rock on the map with their awesome sounds and crazy stunts. Taking those stunts to the party, Datsun’s guitarists Phil and Christian talked crazy festival stories, brushes with the stars and surviving R&V.

What are your festival survival tips? Christian: I don’t bring them, but a lot of people swear by gumboots and then one of those plastic raincoat things that look like a plastic bag turn out to be quite handy [this is true, my friend and I invested in both upon arrival]. My number one is earplugs because if you’re trying to get to sleep at 5 in the morning. Phil: Have your wits about you really cause there’s going to be heaps of drunk dudes and drunk dicks. From the festival line up, who would you most like to collaborate with?
Christian: I was actually standing side of stage thinking that these guys (Fur Patrol) could maybe have a rhythm guitarist. Phil: I was going to suggest the same thing that we should collaborate with these guys cause Julia’s got a great voice, we could do a duet with her and Dolf! What’s your best festival party story yet?
Phil: One time we were playing this festival, we were in Belgium and we’d just finished playing and we got off stage and Lars from Metallica busted in and was swearing his head off because he’d missed us...we had to leave the festival because us and Metallica were playing in two days in Denmark and it was a 21 hour drive to where we were playing in Denmark so we couldn’t stay and see Metallica and he was really pissed off about that. He was like, "Oh I’ve got a spot side of stage for the Datsuns...”and then he was like “Nah f**k that, I’ve got my jet you guys are going to come with me,” and we were like "Ah yeah, OK!" Carl Cox He’s been ruled King of the DJ’s by fans and major mixing magazines alike, has a career spanning a quarter of a century and is now continuing life on the road while spearheading two record companies. The hits are many, the influences varied, the music still pumping. Welcome Mr Cox, back to New Zealand. May your adventures be many. What are you getting up to while you’re in New Zealand? It’s the first time I’ve actually decided to come to New Zealand and get a motorbike. We got a few friends, we picked them up in Auckland, we rode to Pauanui and stayed overnight there and then yesterday, in that terrible rain, we rode all the way from Pauanui to here... It was well worth it really because my idea is to see a lot more of New Zealand while I’m here..And then after that I’m going to be riding for the next two weeks all over New Zealand Where are you most looking forward to going? I’m actually looking forward to the ferry ride going across! What’s the best thing about playing festivals like this?
I think it’s the unity of a lot of people who would never really of been exposed to the different types of music and I like the comradery of festivals...you don’t really get that spirit anywhere else and I think people like the idea it’s outside the confinements of being in a night club – we can wear what you like, do what you want to do and you get more of a sense of purpose and I think a lot of people enjoy that. Anika Moa
With her entourage of thirteen mates, Anika Moa was quick to nominate herself as party queen of R&V (or at least her friends, they keep going when she hits the hay at 9pm). A little nervous for her set but still every bit your classic kiwi lass, Anika dished some more practical festival survival advice for the girls and even gave you permission to tell her off if you catch her breaking her New Year’s resolution! What appealed to you about playing at Rhythm and vines?
Santigold. I found out she was playing so I asked my manager to hook me up a gig! And I was just like oh just put me on a small stage somewhere and I have to do it on the main stage and I’m so scared. I’m not a main stage kind of girl; I’m more like a little small stage with trees. Are there any other bands that you came down to check out?
Well I do like Ladyhawke so I’ll see her, House of Shem, Little Bushman, Ladi 6 – yeah lots of my friends that I support their music and love their music.
From the R&V line-up, who would you nominate to be the best to party with? Probably The Kooks or Ladi 6, definitely Ladi 6 cause they’re partiers man, Anika Moa – because of my entourage! But definitely The Kooks I think they’d be the funnest What are your festival survival tips? Just always wear one dress for the whole festival. This is my dress that I’ve been wearing since Sunday and I’m going to wear it all week. I got it from Juliet Hogan. Always just wear one dress and bring heaps of pairs of undies and money!
What are your New Year’s Resolutions?
One is to stop smoking... I’ve told everyone if someone sees me smoking they have to punch me out, or at least tell me off. Did you have any New Years resolutions last year and did you do them?
To stop smoking! Yeah just stop smoking and work really, really hard. Liselle
