Want to get your body in tip top shape once and for all? To help you out, we’ve come up with five super foods that you should try and incorporate into your diet every day. Some of them are obvious, some not so much… EggsAlthough there was an egg scare from the diet conscious in the 90s because of their fat and cholesterol content, recent research has shown little, if any, connection between dietary cholesterol and blood cholesterol. Eggs are a great source of protein, containing all eight amino acids. They also promote healthy hair and nails because of their high sulphur content and wide array of vitamins and minerals.
Sneak it in by… Frying, poaching, hard boiling, scrambling, making an omelette or adding them to anything else, try and squeeze an egg in each and every day. BlueberriesIn a recent study at Tufts University, blueberries came out as the highest source of antioxidants amongst 60 other fruits and veggies. The antioxidants found in blueberries can help decrease the risk of heart disease and various types of cancer, lower cholesterol, reducing aging of the brain (reducing the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease) and skin! Sneak it in by… Blueberries are delicious on their own, or sprinkle over cereal, add to smoothies or even baking. Frozen blueberries are also a delish icy option.
SpinachTake a leaf out of Popeye’s book and get munching on this delicious green veggie. Spinach contains calcium which strengthens bones, vitamins A and C, fibre, folic acid and magnesium which can help to control cancer (especially in the breast). It also contains folate which helps to protect against heart disease. It also contains lutein which helps to prevent age related blindness. Phew! Sneak it in by… Steaming or sautéing, and serving as a side dish. Adding to your fav soups, savoury muffins, omelettes and frittatas, salads and sandwiches.
ApplesYes, an apple a day keeps the doctor away… We all know it, but how many of us actually follow it? Apples can help protect bones, prevent Alzheimer’s and some cancers, lower cholesterol, manage diabetes and because they contain insoluble and soluble fibre, work to make you feel fuller (which can help with weight loss!). Chewing apples also stimulates saliva which helps to remove stains from your teeth and freshens breath instantly. Yay!
Sneak it in by… Popping one into your bag and snaking on during lunch or throughout the day. YoghurtPick a yoghurt which contains live and active cultures – this means it contains good bacteria, which helps to boost the immune system and provide protection against cancer. These good bacteria help prevent the growth of harmful bacteria that cause bacterial infections and disease, and also promote digestive health. Yoghurt is also a tasty way to ensure you get your daily intake of calcium, and that your bones are kept healthy and strong. Sneak it in by… Eating on its own, adding to cereal or with fruit.
