Over the last couple of years there has been a resurgence of popularity in retro hobbies, one of the most popular being knitting.
Hand-knitting is now, not only a way for your grandmother and her generation to pass the time with, but it's for us as well.
Now the stigma has been lifted we are going to delve into the world of knitting needles, balls of yarn and cups of tea to find out what all the fuss is about…
Why so popular..?
Knitting has become popular in recent times because more people are striving for a simpler way of life. We are now much more appreciative of traditional pursuits and find a lot of satisfaction in making something from start to finish without the need for any complex equipment.
Hand-knitting is actually quite a sociable craft because you can do it anywhere and the repetitive movements allow you to multi-task. You can knit whilst you are walking, talking, watching TV or even reading your favourite magazine.
The popularity of knitting can also be put down to the increasing use of the Internet. Blogs have been set up and groups have been established that are dedicated to knitting, enabling knitters to swap patterns and exchange advice with people from all walks of life. Knitting has also attracted a huge celebrity following with the likes of Julia Roberts, Rose McGowan and Kate Moss all jumping on the knitting bandwagon.
These days many women prefer to knit in groups with people of a similar age and many credit it as a great way to relieve stress. Some claim the repetitive nature of knitting is almost meditative and it is a great activity where you can just sit down, breathe and take some time for yourself.
