This week nzgirl Makalita has sent us an amazing postcard from around the world! She shares her fabulous adventures and travels as an Emirates cabin crew member with us, from the deserts of Cairo through to the glitzy lights of New York! Plus she even spills the beans on how she got such a fantastic job! I’m sending you this postcard from… Dhaka (Bangladesh), Cairo (Egypt), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Alexandria (Egypt), Teharan, Perth (Australia), Mauritius, Singapore, Brisbane, Shanghai, Kuwait, Birmingham, Istanbul, London, New Castle, New York, Cochin (India) Bangkok (Thailand) BomBay (India) Melbourne (Australia), Bahrain, Guangzhow (China) and Johannesburg (Africa).

I got to travel to all these places because… Of the fantastic job that I have been blessed with as a member of a cabin crew. I got my job by… Attending Travel & Careers Training in Auckland and studying the 12 week Certificate in International Flight Attending. I saw the job advertised, made my CV with the help of my lovely trainers, prepared myself mentally and physically for any questions they might ask or any activities I might have had to get involved in. The hardest thing was turning up! I attended all the interviews, I answered all the questions and I attended every group activity they put together. There were about 250 to 300 participants who turned up for this job and only 8 of us who made it in and got the job in Dubai.

The coolest thing I saw was… Wow... There’s sooo many things! The Statue of Liberty, going to Movie World and meeting all my cartoon heros (Scooby Doo, Batman, Superman).

The hottest bargain I found was… A set of king size full bedding that was supposed to cost more then NZ$400, and I bought it for only NZ$50 in the underground market in Bangkok.
My craziest night out was… A night to remember alright. We went on a tour call Dubai Safari Tour. We went to the desert and it was an amazing experience. We got to experience life in the dessert, went sand boarding, camel riding and it was amazing. Will definitely do it again sometime. Towards the end of the tour we also had a traditional dinner. We sat down and had a beautiful meal, and were even entertained by a belly dancer! While having our meal the belly dancer pulled me up to dance with her, I was really shy and because I don’t know how to belly dance, did the hula. Everyone started cheering very loud and asked me to perform again! The manager of the company asked me to teach his dancers how to do it, so they could mix it in with their own moves. It was a night to remember.
The country that’s most like home is… Well obviously the country that reminds me soo much of home is Australia. Other countries have their own beauty and uniqueness, but there’s no place like home. Everything in Australia is the closest to what we have at home. When I went to Mauritius it reminded me sooo much of Tonga (which is where I’m originally from). Mauritius is so much like Tonga because of the beach, the food and the environment and the people.

The country that’s most different to home is… The country that’s most diff from home is Dubai. It has such a unique culture and they run things much differently here. There is a license for everything; to drink and to have alcohol in your building, you must have an alcohol license. Also it’s different from home because you drive on the opposite side to NZ roads. There are so many different things that occur in this country due to its religion, but it’s amazing and I get to see another world. September is the holy month and all food shops are closed and there is no eating or drinking in public. In that month we must dress respectably and accordingly. I truly respect the culture here in Dubai and there’s more that I still need to know and discover about the culture.

Another different country from home is Darkha (Bangladesh). The first time I went to Bangladesh my heart was crying out for the poor people that were on the road asking for money. These are not just people...these are mums, with kids that had no clothes, literally asking for money to feed their kids. This made me realise how blessed I am. It was very different from home. I LOVE New Zealand; there’s no place like home…
I definitely want to come back and visit… Because of the beauty of each country, it is sooo hard to pick and say which is my favourite. They all have there own beauty. I will definitely go back to every single country and cities that I've been to.
And do… I will go back to shop in Bangkok and in China because things are cheap there and the quality is not so bad. Bangkok has amazing hospitality and food. I’d go back to Africa for it’s animal tours, Singerpore for fantastic fresh fruits, New York to see stars in live concerts (P. Diddy, Chris Tucker, J.Lo and many more). London for the London Bridge and famous wax museum…
