Top Tips for Eco-Friendly Holidays

Here at nzgirl we’re all about doing our bit to keep our gorgeous country clean and green. Every little bit helps; whether it’s a small action or something bigger.

We asked the original Eco Man Malcom Rands of ecostore for his top tips to help you stay eco friendly while on holiday this summer, whether you’re camping or hitting your bach.

Holiday travel
1: Holiday in destinations that require shorter journeys. Don’t speed or worry about overtaking everything on the road. This saves fuel (and lives).

2: Hire low-emissions rental vehicles/campervans. Hire boats at source rather than towing all over the country.

3: Use a bike and walk where possible – enjoy being outdoors while summer lasts.

Campsite
1: Ask your holiday park about environmental accreditation (e.g. Green Globe) and seek out ones that are accredited. The consumer is king and you can make a difference here.

2: Use biodegradable products where possible. Try using potato starch plates for summer BBQ’s and picnics instead of plastic ones.

3: Bring your recycling back to the big smoke.

Boat
1: Re-fuel your boat carefully. When you change the oil in your motor, put the waste oil in a covered container, remove it from the boat and dispose of it ashore to prevent spills in the water.

2: Dispose appropriately of hazardous waste materials used on your boat.

3: Use ecostore’s cleaning products so you don’t release toxic residues, phosphates or other potentially harmful chemicals into waterways. What goes down the plug goes straight into the ocean and the snapper you’re catching.

Bach
1: Install a rainwater tank at your bach.

2: Install water efficient shower heads at your bach.

3: Use ecostore’s cleaning products so you don’t release toxic residues, phosphates or other potentially harmful chemicals into septic tanks and waterways. What goes down the plug goes straight into the ground water and the beautiful environment that you love.
