nzgirl Picks: Twilight

The soon to be released Twilight film has taken the world by storm, but is it set to do the same here? Ramarea was lucky enough to score a sneak peek of the flick, and gives us her verdict here...

Fresh love – so sickly sweet and so hard to resist. If you love a good romance story, you’ll get sucked into Twilight. Don’t let preconceived notions of tweens, vampires and Harry Potter put you off!

Having raked in over $70 million in the US in its opening weekend, Twilight is a mass phenomenon that’s shaking up the box offices world wide, and has been shaking up best selling lists for a few years now.

The film is based off a series of novels which have been touted as the 'Next-Harry-Potter’ type craze. Like Harry Potter, although the books are written for a younger audience (cue swooning teenage girls), they hold cult and mass appeal for all ages.

Basically 17-year-old Bella (Kristin Stewart) moves to live with her dad in Forks, a darky, sleepy rural town. Bella fancies herself as a bit of a loner, and even though the cool kids at school are keen to take her under their wing,  she finds herself drooling over the mysterious, brooding and utterly dazzling Edward Cullen. He’s unlike any boy Bella’s ever met, and with good reason; he’s a vampire that’s over a decade old!

After a rocky start, a few lustful stares and awkward fumbling, the two fall in love. However the fact that Edward is a blood hungry vampire does cast a dark shadow over their beautiful romance. Luckily, unlike most vampires Edward’s family are ‘vegetarian’ – they only eat the blood of animals. Throughout the film Edward struggles with the idea of trusting himself around Bella because as much as he loves her, he thirsts for her blood...(eksh!)

This flick is filled with angsty love and passion, along with a good ol’ (but not necessarily bad!) dose of cheesiness, humour and action. At one moment I was actually clamping my checks in suspense! I’ve never read the books but I fell into the storyline straight away.

I was also impressed by Robert Pattison – although they’ve made him whiter than a Nappy San-ed sheet, he still manages to lure you in with his mysterious nature and smouldering looks. I spent a good dose of the film trying to figure out why I thought he was so hot, and why on earth I wanted to find my very own vampire boyfriend!

Overall it’s a cute, romance flick blended with a little bit of girl friendly action and horror; it’s one you have definitely got to check out for yourself before making any judgements!
