Taking on our theme of 'What She Said', we thought it only best to gather up some expert beauty advice. And who is more expert than Natalie Bloom, founder and creator of one of our favourite cosmetics brands, Bloom? 1: What is the best beauty secret for the women in her 20s? Your 20s are a great time to have fun and experiment with makeup. Go light on your foundation and try different colours, textures and looks to see what works best for you. It’s also important to start a good skincare regime that includes daily use of a sunscreen as prevention is much better than cure! 2: Primer? Should we be wearing it? A primer or makeup base is critical as it creates an ideal canvas for you to apply your makeup. Just as you would apply a base coat of paint to your house, primer is an essential step to even out your skin tone prior to makeup application. 3: What do you think is missing from the beauty regimes of the average
woman? Time! In today’s super-charged world, we no longer take the time to enjoy the romance and ritual of applying makeup. Instead of madly slapping on makeup in the car on the way to work, I encourage you to take a few moments to enjoy some time to yourself and let the simplest sweep of mascara or lip gloss literally change the colour of your day. 4: Your book Beauty in Bloom is a collection of beautiful inspirations - what's inspiring you right now? I am currently inspired by the theme of ‘modern nostalgia’. Whether it is a sweet note on elegant stationary, the femininity of a handkerchief or the ritual of applying makeup at a dresser like my Grandmother did, I love indulging in things that carry the meaning of the past in a fast moving present. I’ve been so consumed by this theme that it has flowed from my personal life into my business! In fact, Bloom’s first flagship store in Australia was designed with the aesthetic of modern nostalgia in mind.
5: How important do you think a signature scent is? Perfume is the exclamation mark on the statement you are making. It’s the magical finishing touch that I complete every outfit off with. 6: What is your advice for the complete beauty novice?
If you’re a complete beauty novice who would like to become a beauty guru, the one thing you need is an insatiable curiosity! I don’t have a makeup artist background, but when I started out I was always game enough to play around with different looks – after all, what’s the worse that can happen? You have to wipe it off and start again?! Also be brave enough to ask for tips and advice from professionals. 7: If I had all the money and time in the world my next big beauty splurge would be.... My ultimate beauty indulgence would be having the time to receive a weekly manicure. 8: Do we need to spend a lot of money to get amazing style? A fat bank account doesn’t necessarily equate to amazing style! For me, there is nothing more captivating than someone who dresses with confidence. A stylish woman isn’t a slave to fashion. She is someone who has a strong sense of what works for her and the ability to mix designer brands with vintage finds and the odd chain-store gem in a way that makes her feel comfortable. 9: What’s the next big thing in beauty? Without a doubt, we’ll continue to see the rise of the natural and organic movement. Beauty customers are increasingly conscious of where their products come from and what nasties they don’t want to see on ingredient lists in their bathroom cabinet. Bloom has a heritage based in natural and botanical ingredients. From our Everyday Care botanical skincare range that uses the best nature has to offer to our Pure Mineral Makeup Collection that is 100% additive free, Bloom continues to maintain this commitment. We also have some very exciting products planned for 2009 that will increase our presence in this field. So, definitely watch this space! 10: What’s your favourite beauty tip ever? Years ago, makeup artist, April Greaves, gave me a beauty tip that I still use daily. She showed me that by applying black eye liner to the upper inner rim of your eyes, your lashes instantly look thicker and longer. Who wouldn’t want their lashes to look their bat-worthy best?! 11: Who are your favourite style icons? The French actress, singer and Balenciaga muse, Charlotte Gainsbourg, has such an effortless and individual sense of style. She is not necessarily conventionally beautiful, but she wholeheartedly embraces her quirks and has such a compelling charisma. To me, Charlotte embodies beauty and great style.
