Detox Tips of the Stars

For many of us the word ‘detox’ might mean not making that second run to Starbucks in the morning, replacing our afternoon chocolate fix with a piece of fruit or not having that extra glass of wine with dinner. The rich and famous however, have different ideas altogether…

For some of our favourite celebs detoxing is a part of their every day life. Treatments can include special diets, liver cleansing, lymph drains, massage, body wraps, facials and saunas...

We've broken down some of the more extreme forms of detox that our favourite (or crazy!) celebs have subjected themselves to over the years…

Leech Therapy
Demi Moore openly admits to using leeches as part of her detox regime. She came across ‘leech therapy’ while in Austria and swears by it as a way of keeping healthy and looking younger. The therapy involves bathing in turpentine before placing leeches on the skin where they proceed to suck and supposedly detoxify your blood.

Cupping
Gwyneth Paltrow caused controversy back in 2004 when she was spotted sporting half a dozen circular bruises on her back, which were believed to be a result of an alternative therapy called ‘cupping’. It is a form of acupuncture that focuses on the movement of blood, energy and body fluids. Cupping has been a part of Chinese medicine for nearly 3000 years and the practice involves taking a number of glass cups and heating them with a naked flame. The cups are then applied to the skin which creates a vacuum and draws the skin up under the cups.

The alleged benefits include relief from muscle spasms and back pain, as well as promoting the release of toxins that have built up in the body and improving the circulation of blood and lymph vessels.

Colonics
Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Love and Janet Jackson have all been linked to colon cleansing, although not as extreme as the previous treatments mentioned it can be just as traumatic. Colon cleansing is where water is infused into the rectum to cleanse and flush out accumulated waste and toxins. Colonics have become more and more popular and many people use it to jump-start weight loss. The benefits can include looking and feeling younger, relief from constipation and improvement in overall health and well-being.

We recommend you guys don’t try any of these treatments at home!

Jessica Williamson
