Tempo° Dance Festival: Tempo° 2008 launches on September 28 with a w ave of real dancing bodies that boogie, glide, weave and pirouette up Queen Street to Aotea Square - where a free dance class will be held! The month long programme features an extensive range of dance shows and workshops to put your own rhythm in action. With over 1000 performers, 17 venues and 122 performances, tempo° 2008 puts us in the dancing spirit! See www.tempo.co.nz for further info. 1 October Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra free concert: The orchestra play a free ‘Happy Hour’ from 6.30pm to give those new to classical music a taste of the works. The concert is more relaxed than the full concerts, with part of the stalls of the Auckland Town Hall set up cabaret style. It will preview The Glory of Strings, being performed the following night. 2 – 4, 8-10 October Flicker: As part of the Tempo° festival, Ann Dewey and four dancers from Spinning Sun have developed dance work Flicker over the last year. Labelled a journey through silence and sound, light and dark, this contemporary dance should be lyrical and energising! The childhood memories of Choreographer Ann Dewey are re-enacted in a graceful and way. The show plays in Christchuch from October 2 to 4 and Auckland from October 8 to 10. See their website at www.spinningsun.co.nz 3 October Cash Cube for Kids: Help out the Child Cancer Foundation and brave kids with cancer by sticking your loose change to the walls of a massive 1.8m x 1.8m colourful cube at the QEII square outside Westfield Downtown, Auckland. At the same time enjoy a spot of Kiwi music, free giveaways and even meet a few celebrities! Organised a group of AUT Public Relations students, the Cash Cube is a fun way to donate your coins. The Script: Irish boys the The Script hit Auckland to play at the Bluestone Room, 8 pm. 3 – 12 October Rotorua Hot Fest: Head to Rotorua for even more exciting activities to choose from during this festival. Now until 4 October Katikati Open-Air Art Festival: Katikati, the town of beautiful murals, is getting involved in a celebration of the arts. The festival is a chance for to see mural artists at work, vote for your favourite murals and sculptures, enjoy music, poetry, street entertainment, storytelling, cultural performances, photography, crafts, a raft race and much more. The main event is the New Zealand Mural Contest where eight finalists will paint the town to the festival theme of Journeys. They will be scattered throughout KatiKati and people will be able to watch the murals emerge over five days. The night features indie rock/pop Anything But Federal; alternative grunge band Zero, already known for their impressive gigs after forming just five months ago; XPand and an acoustic set by heavy metal group Reverence. Entry is just $5 on the door from 8pm. Click here for more info. Dove Pink Star Walk: Be a pink angel under the stars with the annual Dove Pink Star Walk at Auckland Domain. Supporting the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation, this 5km fun charity walk is in its third year. Participants are encouraged to wear wings and lots of pink! There are prizes for the best pink outfit, goody bags, a spectacular pink fireworks display and a special performance by Annabel Fay. The Domain itself will even be pink! Last year saw over 2,500 people participate, which raised over $40,000. Now until 13 October Handle the Jandal: Love filmmaking and know of a band trying to make it in the NZ music scene? Handle the Jandal is an annual competition for New Zealanders to create a music video for an up-and-coming local band or artist. The comp aims to showcase new film and music talent and many prizes are to be announced! Held by Radio Active 89FM, the competition is in its 10 th year running and is free to enter. It also gives Indian communities the opportunity to share this much-loved cultural tradition with other New Zealanders.
